Chapter 12 - Gabriel's Sentence

Gabriel did not receive a clean escape from the consequences.

He received eighteen months in federal custody.

Financial penalties.

Supervised release.

Restrictions on business activity.

His attorneys called it favorable.

Beatrice called it consequence.

Chloe called it terrifying.

Gabriel reported voluntarily.

Before he left, he asked Chloe one question.

"Will you wait?"

She stared.

"For you?"

"Yes."

"No."

His face changed.

Chloe continued.

"I'll live."

He swallowed.

"If we're still something when you come back, we'll decide then."

He nodded.

That was harder than a promise.

Better too.

Beatrice visited him.

Their conversations used video relay and in-person interpreters when required.

Gabriel's ASL improved enough that some visits needed less mediation.

The first time he signed a full conversation with his mother, Beatrice cried.

Gabriel asked why.

She signed:

BECAUSE YOU'RE LATE.

Then:

AND HERE.

Both mattered.

Chloe finished her first year of interpreter training.

She worked part-time at a hospital in a support role, not yet independently interpreting complex medical encounters.

She learned ethics.

Scope.

Turn-taking.

Neutrality.

The difference between knowing language and carrying responsibility.

Leo's memory changed too.

Signing no longer belonged only to grief.

It belonged to work.

Friends.

Beatrice.

Her own hands.

One evening Beatrice asked Chloe:

Do you love him?

Chloe signed:

ANNOYING QUESTION.

Beatrice waited.

Chloe sighed.

YES.

Beatrice smiled.

Then signed:

DO NOT MAKE IT A JOB.

Chloe stared.

That was exactly the danger.

Loving a man with a history of violence and power could turn into endless moral supervision.

She refused.

Gabriel's choices remained his.

During custody, he joined no redemption campaign.

No memoir.

No interviews.

He read.

Worked.

Took ASL classes remotely when permitted.

Wrote letters.

Beatrice answered half.

Chloe answered when she wanted.

Sometimes after two weeks.

Gabriel learned to survive delayed access.

A lesson he had avoided his entire life.

Il Canto rehired Chloe after Marco sold the restaurant to a new owner.

She declined.

Not revenge.

She had moved on.

Marco apologized anyway.

"I got scared."

"I know."

"I should've protected my employee."

"Yes."

No villain.

No absolution.

Then Beatrice had a fall.

Minor fracture.

Hospital overnight.

Gabriel could not leave custody.

For the first time, Chloe saw what his power could not fix.

He called through approved channels.

Beatrice signed to him from the hospital bed.

I AM FINE.

He signed:

I SHOULD BE THERE.

She answered:

YOU ARE WHERE YOUR CHOICES PUT YOU.

Then softened.

I LOVE YOU THERE TOO.

Gabriel covered his face.

Chloe turned the phone slightly so Beatrice could still see his hands when he looked up.

Not interpretation.

Access.

Months later, Gabriel returned home.

No convoy.

No press conference.

Beatrice waited at her condo.

Chloe did not.

He noticed.

Beatrice signed:

GOOD.

Gabriel laughed.

"Whose side are you on?"

She signed:

MINE.

Always.
