CHAPTER 9

Three days later, Detective Miller got a warrant for Mark's phone records.
There were five unknown numbers on his call log.
We called all of them.
Four of them were dead ends.
The fifth one was answered by a man with a deep voice.
"Hello," I said.
"Who is this?"
"My name is Lauren Carter. I'm Mark's wife."
"I don't know a Mark."
"Don't lie to me. I know he owes you money."
The man was silent for a long time.
"How much?" he asked.
"I don't know. How much does he owe?"
"Two hundred thousand."
"Two hundred thousand?"
"Yes."
"That's a lot of money."
"He's a high roller."
"Mark's not a high roller. He's a nurse."
"High rollers don't look like high rollers. They look like everyone else."
"What did he do with the money?"
"He gambled it. All of it."
"How did he get the propofol?"
"I don't know anything about propofol."
"Don't lie to me."
"I'm not lying. I don't know anything about propofol."
"Then why did he buy it?"
"I don't know."
"Tell me."
"I can't."
"Why not?"
"Because someone will kill me."
"Who?"
"I don't know."
"Mark is in jail. He can't hurt you."
"I'm not afraid of Mark."
"Then who are you afraid of?"
"The people he was working with."
"What people?"
"I don't know."
"Don't lie to me."
"I'm not lying. I really don't know."
"Then why are you afraid?"
"Because they killed the last person who tried to talk."
"Who was the last person?"
"I don't know."
"You're lying."
"I'm not lying. I really don't know."
I hung up the phone.
"He says Mark owes two hundred thousand dollars," I said.
"That's a lot of money," Detective Miller said.
"I know."
"Where did he get it?"
"He gambled it away."
"Who is he working with?"
"He wouldn't tell me."
"Can we track the phone number?"
"Yes. Let's do that."
We tracked the phone number, but it was a burner phone. It couldn't be traced.
We were back to square one.
I needed to talk to Mark again.
---
I went to see Mark for the third time.
"Who are you working with?" I asked.
"I don't know."
"Don't lie to me."
"I'm not lying. I really don't know."
"Then why are you afraid?"
"Because they know who I am."
"Who?"
"I don't know."
"Mark, you need to tell me the truth."
"I can't."
"Why not?"
"Because if I do, something terrible will happen."
"Something terrible already happened. You tried to kill Emma."
"I know."
"So tell me the truth."
"I can't."
"Then I can't help you."
"I know."
May you like
"Goodbye, Mark."
I walked out of the jail.
