CHAPTER 11

Three days later, Detective Miller got a call from Elias.
Malcolm was in Baltimore.
He was staying at a hotel called The Elite.
"Let's go," I said.
We drove to Baltimore and checked into The Elite.
I called Malcolm's room.
"Hello," he said.
"Mark Carter," I said.
"What about him?"
"He sold you propofol?"
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"Don't lie to me."
"I'm not lying."
"Someone told me you bought propofol from him."
"Who told you that?"
"Elias."
There was a long silence.
"Come to my room," Malcolm said.
I walked to Malcolm's room.
The door opened, and a tall, dark-haired man stood there.
"Come in," he said.
I walked into the room, and he closed the door behind me.
"Sit down," he said.
I sat down.
"Talk to me," I said.
"What do you want to know?"
"Why did you buy propofol?"
"Because I needed it."
"For what?"
"To kill someone."
"Who?"
"The man who owed me money."
"Mark?"
"Yes."
"Why didn't you kill him?"
"Because he was arrested before I could."
"What were you going to do with the propofol?"
"I was going to inject him with it."
"You were going to murder him?"
"Yes."
"With propofol?"
"Yes."
I stared at him.
"Then Mark took the propofol and used it on his daughter?"
"Apparently."
"Why?"
"I don't know. Maybe he was trying to get revenge on me."
"Revenge?"
"Maybe he knew I was going to kill him. Maybe he decided to take his own daughter first. To make me pay."
"That's insane."
"Mark was insane."
"How did he get the money?"
"He stole it from his wife."
"How much?"
"Three hundred thousand."
"That's a lot of money."
"I know."
"Why didn't you stop him?"
"I didn't know about it."
"Then how did he get the propofol?"
"He bought it from someone else."
"Who?"
"Vincent."
"Where is Vincent now?"
"In jail."
"For what?"
"Drug trafficking."
"So Mark was working with a drug trafficker."
"Yes."
"Who else was he working with?"
"I don't know."
"You're lying."
"I'm not lying."
"Tell me."
"I can't."
"Why not?"
"Because if I do, my family will be killed."
I stared at him.
"Who are you?"
"A man who has made a lot of enemies."
"Who wants to kill your family?"
"The man Mark was working with."
"Who is that?"
"An arms dealer."
"Who is he?"
"His name is Lee."
"Lee who?"
"I don't know."
"Where is he?"
"In Virginia."
"Where in Virginia?"
"Montgomery County."
"Where in Montgomery County?"
"I don't know."
"Tell me."
"I can't."
"Why not?"
"Because if I do, he'll kill me."
"He'll kill you anyway."
"I know."
"So tell me."
"I can't."
May you like
"Goodbye, Malcolm."
I walked out of the hotel room.
