Chapter 7 - The Penthouse

We couldn't stay at the mansion.

"The perimeter is compromised," Alessandro announced later that afternoon, watching as a fleet of armored SUVs pulled up to the front steps. "Lorenzo knows the layout of the estate. Until I mount his head on a spike, we are moving to the city."
"The city?" I asked, carrying a sleepy Emma on my hip.
"My penthouse in Tribeca," he replied, slipping a bespoke suit jacket over his shoulders. "It's a fortress in the sky. Private elevator, biometric locks, bulletproof glass. You will be safe there."
The ride to Manhattan was a masterclass in tactical evasion. We switched cars twice, winding through underground tunnels and service roads. By the time we pulled into the subterranean parking garage of a gleaming glass skyscraper, my nerves were completely frayed.
The penthouse was breathtaking. It occupied the top two floors of the building, offering a 360-degree, panoramic view of the New York skyline. Minimalist, cold, and dripping with wealth. It was beautiful, but it felt incredibly lonely.
"Wow," Emma breathed, her nose pressed against the floor-to-ceiling glass, watching the yellow cabs look like tiny ants far below.
"Do you like it, little one?"
I jumped. Alessandro had walked up behind us silently. He crouched down beside Emma, pointing out the Empire State Building in the distance.
"It's like a castle in the clouds," Emma said, giggling as Alessandro gently poked her nose.
"Exactly," he said. "And nobody can get into this castle without my permission."
I watched them, a strange, warm ache blooming in my chest. The most feared man on the East Coast was currently explaining the architecture of the Chrysler building to a three-year-old. He was a walking contradiction. A monster to his enemies, but to us... a protector.
Later that evening, after Maria had put Emma to bed in a guest room, I found Alessandro standing on the sprawling outdoor terrace. The wind whipped at his dark hair as he stared out over the glittering city lights, a glass of bourbon in his hand.
I stepped out onto the terrace, wrapping a thick cashmere shawl around my shoulders against the evening chill.
"You shouldn't be out here," he murmured without turning around. "Snipers."
"We're on the eightieth floor," I replied, stepping up beside him. "If a sniper can hit us from here, they deserve a medal."
A low chuckle vibrated in his chest. "You are surprisingly brave for someone who just survived an assassination attempt."
"I have to be brave," I said, looking down at my hands. "I have a daughter to protect. I don't have the luxury of falling apart."
Alessandro turned to face me. The ambient light from the city cast sharp, beautiful shadows across his jawline. "You don't have to protect her alone anymore, Elena. I told you. You are mine to protect."
"Why?" I asked, the question finally bursting past my lips. "Why are you doing all of this? I found a pillow. I looked at a ledger. You could have just paid me off and sent me to Ohio. Why bring me into the center of your war?"
He took a step closer. The air between us suddenly felt impossibly thick, charged with a magnetic current that made it hard to breathe. He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers brushing a stray lock of hair behind my ear.
"Because," Alessandro said, his voice dropping to a husky whisper, "I have spent my entire life surrounded by people who lie to me. People who want my money, my power, or my life. And then a three-year-old girl and her mother stood up in front of three hundred dangerous people and told the absolute, unvarnished truth."
His thumb traced the line of my jaw, sending a shiver down my spine that had nothing to do with the wind.
"You are a rarity, Elena," he murmured, his dark eyes burning into mine. "And I have always been a collector of rare things."
He leaned in, his face inches from mine. I could smell the bourbon on his breath, feel the heat radiating from his body. I was paralyzed, caught in the gravity of his orbit.

His lips brushed lightly against my forehead. A chaste, agonizingly slow kiss.
"Go to sleep, Elena," he whispered against my skin. "Tomorrow, we go hunting."
