Chapter 11 - The Aftermath

The ride back to the Tribeca penthouse was a masterclass in silent, suffocating tension.

Alessandro sat beside me in the back of the armored Maybach, the glass partition raised to give us complete privacy from the driver and Dante. He hadn't said a word since we left the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He just held my hand, his thumb rhythmically stroking my knuckles, his dark eyes staring out the window at the blurred city lights.
My lips were still swollen from the kiss on the terrace. My heart was still hammering against my ribs, a chaotic drumbeat of adrenaline and something far more dangerous: hope.
When the private elevator doors opened into the penthouse, the silence finally broke.
"Dante," Alessandro commanded, pulling off his tuxedo jacket and tossing it over a leather chair. "Sweep the perimeter. Double the guard on the eighth floor. And find out how the hell Lorenzo Cole got past our men at the Met."
"Boss, it was a blind spot," Dante argued, looking deeply ashamed. "He paid a catering staffer ten grand to switch uniforms in the alley."
"I don't pay you for excuses, I pay you for perfection," Alessandro snapped, his voice a lethal whip crack. "Fix it. Now."
Dante nodded sharply and disappeared down the hall.
Alessandro ran a hand through his dark hair, the pristine image of the billionaire unraveling to reveal the exhausted, violent king underneath. He walked over to the wet bar, pouring two fingers of neat whiskey. He didn't drink it. He just stared at the amber liquid.
I slipped off my diamond collar, setting it gently on the coffee table. The heavy, cold weight of it was gone, but the weight of the night remained.
"I shouldn't have let you come tonight," Alessandro said, his back still turned to me. "I was arrogant. I wanted to parade you in front of them, to show them they couldn't touch me. And because of my pride, you were almost killed."
I stepped out of my heels and walked barefoot across the plush rug until I was standing right behind him. I reached out, pressing my palm flat against the center of his back. His muscles were coiled so tight they felt like stone.
"I threw an ice bucket at a man with a gun," I said quietly. "If you think you can control what happens to me, you're wrong."
He turned around slowly. His dark eyes searched my face, looking for any trace of regret, any sign that the terror of his world was finally breaking me. He found nothing but steady resolve.
"You aren't a maid anymore, Elena," he whispered, stepping into my space, the heat radiating from him wrapping around me like a blanket. "You are the woman who stood in front of a bullet for me."
"I would do it again," I breathed, realizing in that exact moment just how true it was.
Alessandro let out a ragged sigh, dropping his forehead to mine. His hands came up to cup my face, his thumbs brushing over my cheekbones. "I don't know what to do with you," he confessed, the ruthless Don sounding incredibly vulnerable. "I know how to destroy my enemies. I know how to run an empire. But this... us... you make me terrified, Elena."
"Dangerous men don't get terrified," I teased softly, echoing the thought I had in his ballroom just three days ago.
"They do when they finally find something they can't live without," he replied.
He leaned down, capturing my lips again. This time, there was no desperation, no frantic adrenaline. It was slow, deep, and agonizingly sweet. He kissed me like I was the only pure thing left in his world, a silent promise sealed in the quiet of his penthouse.
"Mama?"
We broke apart instantly.
Standing in the hallway, rubbing her sleepy eyes and clutching her stuffed rabbit, was Emma.
"Emma, baby," I rushed over to her, dropping to my knees and pulling her into a tight hug. The scent of her baby shampoo brought tears to my eyes. "What are you doing up? Did you have a bad dream?"
"I heard loud voices," she mumbled, burying her face in my shoulder. She peeked over my arm at Alessandro. "Mr. Moretti looks mad."
Alessandro’s entire demeanor shifted. The lethal edge vanished. He crouched down next to us, a soft, genuine smile touching his lips.
"I'm not mad, piccola," he said, using the Italian word for 'little one'. "I just had a long night at work. Your mama was helping me."
Emma looked at my red silk dress. "You look like a queen."
May you like
Alessandro’s eyes flicked to mine, dark and burning. "She certainly does." He stood up, offering his hand to Emma. "Come on. Let's get you back to bed. The castle is perfectly safe tonight."
As I watched the most feared man on the East Coast gently carry my daughter back to her room, I realized that my old life was truly dead. I didn't want it back.
