Chapter 15 - The Breach

The deafening wail of the perimeter alarm shattered the peaceful evening. Red emergency lights began flashing inside the cabin, painting the snow in harsh, bloody strokes.

"Boss! We have contact!" Dante shouted through his radio, running out of the communications room. "Multiple hostiles. They breached the western ridge. They have RPGs!"

"Get Elena and Emma to the bunker!" Alessandro roared, instantly drawing his weapon, his romantic demeanor vanishing into pure, lethal focus. "Arm everyone. Do not let them breach the main doors!"

"No!" I shouted, grabbing Alessandro’s arm. "I’m not hiding in a hole while you fight!"

"Elena, this is not a negotiation!" he yelled over the sound of the siren. "If I die, Dante gets you out through the tunnels. Go!"

Before I could argue, an explosion rocked the cabin. The ground shook violently, throwing me off balance. One of the reinforced windows in the living room shattered inward, raining thick, bulletproof glass across the floor.

The Russians had arrived.

"Mama!" Emma screamed from the hallway, terrified by the explosion. Maria was clutching her tightly.

"Go to them!" Alessandro commanded, giving me a hard push toward the hallway. "Keep your gun drawn!"

I didn't have time to argue. I scrambled toward Emma, grabbing her from Maria’s arms. "Downstairs! Now!" I yelled, leading the nanny toward the basement door.

Gunfire erupted outside. The distinctive, heavy rattle of AK-47s clashed with the sharp return fire of Alessandro’s men. The cabin was turning into a warzone.

I pushed Maria and Emma down the wooden stairs into the reinforced cellar. The heavy steel door locked behind us. It was dark, cold, and smelled of earth.

"Stay quiet," I whispered, huddling them into the darkest corner behind a stack of wooden crates. I pulled the small Sig Sauer from my waistband, my hands shaking, but my grip tight.

Above us, all hell broke loose. Heavy boots pounded on the floorboards. Men shouted in Russian. The terrifying sound of automatic weapons firing indoors echoed down the stairwell.

I held my breath, pointing the gun at the steel door.

Ten minutes passed. An eternity of terror. The gunfire above slowly began to taper off, replaced by an eerie, ringing silence.

Then, the handle on the steel door slowly turned.

It was locked, but a heavy thud reverberated through the metal. Someone was kicking it.

Thud. The hinges groaned.

Thud. The locking mechanism snapped.

The door flew open. Standing at the top of the stairs, silhouetted by the red emergency lights, was Viktor Volkov. He was bleeding from his shoulder, but a massive, cruel smile stretched across his face.

"Well, well," Viktor laughed darkly, stepping down the stairs. "Moretti is dead. His men are dead. And now, I claim my prize."

My blood turned to ice. Alessandro is dead.

The words didn't compute. They couldn't. I refused to believe it. But as Viktor stepped closer, raising a massive combat knife, instinct took over.

I didn't think about the recoil. I didn't think about the noise. I thought about the man who had taught me how to shoot, and the little girl cowering behind me.

Keep your feet shoulder-width apart. Both eyes open.

I raised the gun.

"You're just a maid," Viktor sneered, taking another step. "You don't have the stomach to—"

BANG.

I squeezed the trigger. The bullet struck Viktor square in the chest. He staggered backward, his eyes widening in pure shock.

BANG. BANG.

Two more shots. Center mass.

Viktor collapsed backward onto the stairs, his massive body tumbling down the wooden steps until he landed in a lifeless heap at my feet.

The silence returned, heavier this time. I stood there, the gun still raised, smoke curling from the barrel, my heart completely numb.

"Elena!"

A voice roared from the top of the stairs. A familiar, desperate roar.

I looked up. Alessandro stood there. He was covered in blood, his shirt torn, a dark bruise forming on his jaw. But he was alive.

He looked down at Viktor's body, then at me holding the smoking gun.

He rushed down the stairs, falling to his knees and wrapping me in a fierce, crushing embrace. The Sig Sauer dropped from my hand, clattering to the concrete floor.

"You're alive," I sobbed, burying my face in his bloodstained chest.

"I promised you I would survive," Alessandro whispered fiercely, kissing the top of my head. "The Bratva are gone. It's over. You're safe."

He pulled back, looking at me, looking at the dead Russian boss, and then back at my tear-streaked face. The realization of what I had just done settled over him.

May you like

The king of the East Coast smiled, wiping a tear from my cheek.

"Remind me," Alessandro murmured, his eyes filled with absolute worship. "Never to make you angry."
