Chapter 20 - The Pillow That Changed Everything

That evening, the penthouse was quiet. The rain tapped gently against the floor-to-ceiling windows, turning the city into a canvas of blurry, glittering lights.
Emma, now four years old, was sitting on the plush rug in the living room, building a massive fortress out of wooden blocks. Alessandro was sitting cross-legged next to her, completely abandoning his terrifying mafia persona to help her construct a drawbridge.
"No, Papa, the red block goes on top," Emma instructed with all the authority of a tiny general.
"Ah, my apologies, Principessa. The red block it is," Alessandro chuckled, adjusting the tower.
I sat on the sofa, watching them, a cup of chamomile tea in my hand. A deep, profound sense of peace washed over me. It still felt like a dream sometimes—the money, the power, the safety. But looking at the gentle way Alessandro interacted with my daughter, I knew it was real.
I set my teacup down and placed a hand over my stomach. It was barely a bump yet, just a slight curve hidden beneath my cashmere sweater.
"Emma," I called out softly.
She looked up, her big eyes bright. "Yes, Mama?"
"Come here for a second, baby."
She scrambled to her feet and ran over, climbing onto the sofa next to me. Alessandro followed, sitting on the edge of the coffee table, watching us with quiet adoration.
"Do you remember the night we went to the big party with the chandeliers?" I asked Emma, brushing her hair behind her ear.
"The night I saw the pretty lady put the pillow in her tummy?" Emma nodded solemnly. "She was silly."
Alessandro let out a low laugh, reaching out to squeeze Emma's foot. "She was very silly, little one."
"Well," I said, my heart fluttering with nervous excitement. I looked up at Alessandro, my eyes locking with his. "I want to show you something."
I took Emma's small hand and gently placed it flat against my stomach.
Alessandro froze. The absolute stillness of a predator completely caught off guard. His dark eyes widened, snapping from my face down to my stomach, and back up again.
"Mama's tummy is getting a little bigger," I whispered to Emma, though my eyes never left my husband. "But I promise you, this time... it’s not a pillow with little flowers."
For three agonizing seconds, Alessandro didn't breathe. I saw a hundred emotions flash across his face—shock, disbelief, terror, and finally, an overwhelming, earth-shattering joy.
"Elena?" his voice cracked. The Reaper of New York, the King of the East Coast, sounded like a breathless boy.
I nodded, a tear slipping down my cheek. "We're having a baby, Alessandro."
He didn't say another word. He surged forward, wrapping his arms around me and Emma, burying his face in my neck. His broad shoulders shook, and I felt the dampness of his tears against my skin. It was the first time I had ever seen him cry.
"Thank you," he whispered fiercely into my hair, pulling back just enough to press his large, warm hand exactly where Emma's tiny hand rested on my stomach. "Thank you for my life, Elena."
Emma giggled, wrapping her arms around Alessandro's neck. "Papa is crying! Are you happy, Papa?"
Alessandro laughed, a rich, booming sound that filled the penthouse, wiping his eyes. He kissed Emma's cheek, then leaned in to capture my lips in a slow, reverent kiss.
"I am the happiest man in the world, piccola," he said, holding his family tightly against his chest.
And as we sat there in our castle in the clouds, surrounded by the empire we had fought for, I knew he was right. The ballroom had erupted over a baby that never existed. But the love that grew from the ashes? That was the most real thing in the world.
