CHAPTER 9: The Reason Mark Chose Me

The words stayed in the air.
Like smoke.
Like a warning.
“I chose you because of your father.”
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Even the officer stopped for a moment.
Because suddenly, this was no longer just about a violent husband.
It was about something that had started before the wedding.
Before the bruises.
Before the lies.
I looked at my father.
His face had changed.
I had seen him angry.
I had seen him disappointed.
I had seen him scared for me.
But this was different.
This was recognition.
Like he had just heard a name from a nightmare he thought was over.
“Robert?”
Mark smiled.
“There it is.”
My father’s eyes narrowed.
“What do you know?”
Mark laughed softly.
“Ask your daughter.”
My stomach tightened.
“Ask me what?”
Mark looked at me.
“Ask yourself why I knew so much about you before we met.”
The room went quiet.
Because suddenly…
I remembered.
The things I thought were romantic.
The things I thought proved he cared.
The things that now felt wrong.
He knew my favorite restaurant before I told him.
He knew my father’s name.
He knew my childhood neighborhood.
He knew I hated hospitals.
He knew about my grandmother’s inheritance.
At the time, I thought:
He pays attention.
Now I wondered:
Who gave him that information?
My father looked at Mark.
“Who sent you?”
Mark smiled.
“You already know.”
“No.”
My father’s voice became colder.
“I want you to say it.”
Mark looked around the room.
Then slowly said:
“Victor Lang.”
The name changed everything.
My father stepped back.
“No.”
I looked between them.
“Dad?”
He didn’t answer.
“Who is Victor Lang?”
My father remained silent.
And that scared me more than anything.
Because my father always answered.
Mark laughed.
“Interesting.”
He looked at me.
“Your father never told you?”
“Told me what?”
“That he spent years making enemies.”
My father stepped forward.
“Mark.”
But Mark continued.
“He was a prosecutor, Emily.”
“I know.”
“No.”
He smiled.
“You know the title.”
“You don’t know the consequences.”
My father had spent thirty years putting dangerous people away.
Criminals.
Corrupt businessmen.
Powerful men who believed money could buy them freedom.
One name came up again and again.
Victor Lang.
A billionaire businessman who was investigated for fraud, bribery, and illegal financial operations.
My father was the prosecutor who led the case.
Victor Lang went to prison.
But before sentencing…
He made a promise.
A threat.
He told my father:
“You took everything from me. One day, I’ll take something from you.”
I looked at my father.
“You never told me.”
His eyes softened.
“I thought it was over.”
Mark laughed.
“That was your mistake.”
The officer looked at Mark.
“Are you saying Victor Lang instructed you to marry Emily?”
Mark didn’t answer.
But his silence was enough.
My blood ran cold.
“You used me.”
Mark looked at me.
At least this time…
He didn’t pretend.
“I needed access.”
My chest tightened.
“Access to what?”
He glanced at my father.
“Your family.”
The pain of that answer was worse than I expected.
Because every memory changed.
Every conversation.
Every kiss.
Every promise.
Was it all fake?
My father looked devastated.
“Emily…”
I looked at him.
“Did you know?”
The question hurt him.
Because he knew what I was asking.
Not if he knew Mark.
If he knew I was a target.
“No.”
His answer came immediately.
“I swear.”
I studied his face.
And I believed him.
Because for all his mistakes…
My father had never been good at hiding guilt.
Mark suddenly laughed.
“You still don’t understand.”
Everyone looked at him.
“Victor didn’t just want revenge.”
He smiled.
“He wanted proof.”
“Proof of what?”
Mark looked at my father.
“That you were willing to break the law for your daughter.”
The room went silent.
My father’s face changed.
“What are you talking about?”
Mark leaned back.
“Your father’s biggest weakness has always been you.”
I felt sick.
“He knew that.”
Mark continued:
“He knew if someone threatened Emily, Robert Hayes would do anything.”
My father looked at him.
“That’s a lie.”
“Is it?”
Mark smiled.
“Remember the investigation five years ago?”
My father froze.
I noticed.
“Dad?”
He didn’t answer.
Mark continued.
“Victor wanted one thing.”
The room waited.
“He wanted your father to destroy evidence.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
My father looked at me.
“Emily, listen—”
“No.”
I stepped back.
“Is this true?”
His silence hurt.
My father finally spoke.
“Years ago, Victor tried to manipulate me.”
“Did you help him?”
“No.”
His answer was immediate.
“Never.”
Mark laughed.
“But you almost did.”
Everyone turned.
My father looked furious.
“Enough.”
Mark smiled.
“Tell her.”
The officer stepped closer.
“Mr. Collins, you need to stop.”
But Mark looked at me.
“Your father had one moment of weakness.”
A pause.
“And I have proof.”
Mark pulled out his phone.
He tapped the screen.
Then turned it around.
A recording appeared.
A conversation.
My father’s voice.
Older.
Exhausted.
Desperate.
And the words coming from the phone made my entire world stop.
“If you touch my daughter, I’ll do whatever you want.”
The room went silent.
I looked at my father.
“Dad…”
His face collapsed.
Because he knew.
He knew exactly what that recording was.
And he knew what it would make me believe.
But then something unexpected happened.
My father didn’t deny it.
He looked at me.
And whispered:
“I said those words…”
A pause.
“But not for the reason you think.”
My heart was pounding.
“What does that mean?”
He looked at Mark.
Then at me.
“Because that recording was created to hide the real truth.”
The room froze.
“What real truth?”
My father took a deep breath.
And finally said:
“Mark was never working alone.”
Everyone turned.
“Who else was involved?”
My father looked toward the kitchen.
Toward the woman who had been silent all night.
Diane Collins.
And whispered:
“His mother.”
Diane’s face turned white.
Because the secret she had protected for years…
May you like
Was finally coming out.
