CHAPTER 13: The Night My Mother Died

The phone slipped slightly in my hand.
I almost dropped it.
Not because Daniel Whitmore had called.
Not because he was alive.
Not because he had admitted betraying my father.
But because of one sentence.
“Your father was there that night.”
The night my mother died.
The night I had spent twelve years trying to accept.
The night everyone told me was an accident.
I looked at my father.
And for the first time in my life…
I didn’t know what I saw.
“Dad?”
My voice cracked.
“Is it true?”
Nobody moved.
My father looked at me.
And the pain in his eyes scared me.
Because it wasn’t the face of a guilty man.
It was the face of someone who had carried something too heavy for too long.
“Emily…”
“Answer me.”
My father closed his eyes.
Then whispered:
“Yes.”
The room went silent.
My knees almost gave out.
“You were there?”
He nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
I stepped back.
“You let me believe you weren’t.”
His eyes filled.
“I thought I was protecting you.”
The same words.
Again.
Always the same words.
Protecting me.
But every secret.
Every lie.
Every hidden truth.
Had only hurt me more.
Mark watched everything.
And I hated that he looked satisfied.
Like my pain was proof he had won.
“Now you understand.”
I turned toward him.
“What?”
“Your father is not the hero you think he is.”
My father’s expression changed.
“Do not compare yourself to me.”
Mark smiled.
“I’m not.”
He looked at me.
“I’m showing her that everyone lies.”
I turned back to my father.
“What happened that night?”
My father didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“Your mother found out about Daniel Whitmore.”
I looked confused.
“Uncle Daniel?”
He nodded.
“She discovered he was working with Victor Lang.”
The room went quiet.
“She was going to expose him.”
I swallowed.
“And?”
My father looked down.
“And Daniel found out.”
The memory came back.
My mother leaving the house that evening.
The last time I saw her.
She kissed my forehead.
She smiled.
And she told me:
“I’ll be back soon.”
I remembered laughing.
I remembered saying:
“Don’t be late.”
Those were the last words I ever said to her.
My father continued.
“Daniel followed her.”
My heart tightened.
“He confronted her.”
“And?”
My father’s voice broke.
“There was an argument.”
Nobody spoke.
“Your mother tried to leave.”
A pause.
“Daniel stopped her.”
I felt sick.
“What happened?”
My father looked at me.
“I arrived after the crash.”
I stared.
“What?”
“I received a call.”
“From who?”
He looked toward the phone.
“Daniel.”
Everything became clear.
The silence.
The fear.
The secrets.
The guilt.
My father continued.
“He told me there had been an accident.”
“But it wasn’t.”
“No.”
His voice cracked.
“It wasn’t.”
The room was completely silent.
Even Mark stopped smiling.
Because the truth was bigger than revenge now.
It was tragedy.
It was betrayal.
It was a family destroyed by one man’s greed.
“So why?”
My voice shook.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
My father looked at me.
“Because your mother was still alive when I found her.”
My breath stopped.
“What?”
Everyone froze.
My father continued:
“For a few minutes.”
Tears filled his eyes.
“She was conscious.”
I covered my mouth.
“She told me something.”
“What?”
He looked at me.
“She told me not to let you become consumed by anger.”
I started crying.
Because that sounded exactly like my mother.
Even in her final moments…
She was protecting me.
“She knew Daniel did it?”
My father nodded.
“She knew.”
“Then why didn’t she tell the police?”
His voice became quiet.
“Because Daniel had already threatened you.”
My heart stopped.
“He said if she exposed him…”
A pause.
“He would come after you.”
My father looked at me.
“That’s why I hid everything.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
My voice broke.
“You should have told me.”
“I know.”
“You should have trusted me.”
“I know.”
“You should have let me choose.”
His tears fell.
“I know.”
For the first time…
My father didn’t defend himself.
He didn’t explain.
He didn’t say he was right.
He admitted he was wrong.
And somehow…
That hurt more.
The officer looked at the phone.
“Is Daniel still on the line?”
I looked.
The call was still connected.
“Daniel?”
No answer.
Then a voice came.
Quiet.
Calm.
“You heard enough.”
My father grabbed the phone.
“Where are you?”
Daniel laughed.
“Still trying to arrest me?”
“You murdered Diane’s trust.”
“You destroyed this family.”
“No.”
Daniel’s voice became cold.
“You did that yourself.”
Then Daniel said something that made everyone freeze.
“I didn’t call to confess.”
A pause.
“I called because there’s one thing Emily still doesn’t know.”
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What?”
Daniel answered:
“Your mother wasn’t the only person who discovered the truth.”
Silence.
“Someone else knew.”
My father frowned.
“Who?”
Daniel laughed.
And then said:
“The person who helped me hide everything.”
Everyone looked around.
Nobody moved.
Then Daniel whispered:
“And that person has been standing beside Emily her entire life.”
My blood went cold.
Because there was only one person left.
Someone who had been there from the beginning.
Someone my mother trusted.
Someone I never suspected.
Daniel said one final sentence before hanging up:
“Ask your father who was driving the car that night.”
The call ended.
The room went silent.
I looked at my father.
“Dad…”
His face had gone completely pale.
Because he knew.
He knew the answer.
And when he finally spoke…
My entire world changed.
May you like
“It was me.”
