CHAPTER 3: The Woman Who Tried To Warn Me

The video continued playing.

Nobody moved.

Nobody even breathed.

The woman’s voice filled my kitchen.

A voice I had heard before.

A voice I never expected to hear again.

“Emily…”

The screen showed a woman sitting in a dark room.

Her face was pale.

Her eyes were tired.

But I recognized her immediately.

My hand covered my mouth.

“No…”

Mark’s expression changed.

Because he knew exactly who she was.

“Sarah.”

The name came out like a whisper.

Sarah Miller.

Mark’s ex-fiancée.

The woman everyone in his family told me was “unstable.”

The woman Diane described as “obsessed.”

The woman Mark said had ruined his life.

I remembered the first time I asked about her.

Mark had held my hand and said:

“Emily, she was just someone who couldn’t accept that it was over.”

I believed him.

Because I loved him.

Because I wanted to believe the man I married was incapable of cruelty.

I was wrong.

On the screen, Sarah looked directly into the camera.

“If Emily is watching this, then Mark has probably already told her I’m crazy.”

My stomach tightened.

A few guests looked at Mark.

He immediately shook his head.

“This is ridiculous.”

Nobody listened.

Sarah continued.

“He always does that.”

“He makes people believe the woman is the problem.”

My father’s eyes slowly moved toward me.

Because he knew.

He knew those words sounded familiar.

Too familiar.

Sarah took a deep breath.

“My name is Sarah Miller.”

“I was engaged to Mark Collins for almost three years.”

She looked down.

“During that time, I learned something important.”

The room became silent.

“Mark doesn’t lose control.”

A pause.

“He chooses when to hurt people.”

My skin went cold.

Mark suddenly stepped forward.

“Turn it off.”

My father didn’t even look at him.

“No.”

“Robert, you have no idea what you’re watching.”

My father looked at him.

“You’re right.”

A pause.

“But I know what I’m seeing.”

He pointed toward the screen.

“A frightened woman telling the truth.”

Sarah continued.

“The first time Mark hit me, he apologized.”

My heart sank.

“He cried.”

She laughed sadly.

“He told me he hated himself for doing it.”

I closed my eyes.

Because that sounded familiar.

So familiar.

After the first time Mark hurt me, he held me for hours.

He cried.

He promised.

He said:

“I don’t know what came over me.”

“I love you.”

“It will never happen again.”

And I believed him.

Sarah’s voice trembled.

“The second time was different.”

“He didn’t apologize immediately.”

“He blamed me.”

The room went quiet.

“He said I made him angry.”

“He said if I behaved better, he wouldn’t have to.”

My father looked at me.

And I couldn’t look away.

Because he knew.

He knew I had heard the same words.

The video paused briefly.

Then Sarah continued.

“But the worst part wasn’t the violence.”

Everyone froze.

“The worst part was what happened afterward.”

She looked directly into the camera.

“His mother helped him cover it up.”

Diane’s face turned white.

“No.”

It was barely audible.

But everyone heard.

Sarah continued.

“Diane told me that nobody would believe me.”

“She told me Mark was respected.”

“She told me I would destroy his future if I spoke.”

My father looked at Diane.

The expression on his face was terrifying.

Not rage.

Disappointment.

“You knew.”

Diane looked away.

Mark suddenly laughed.

A fake laugh.

A desperate laugh.

“This is insane.”

He looked at the guests.

“You’re all really going to believe some old video?”

My father turned toward him.

“Why are you afraid of it?”

Mark stopped.

Because that was the question he couldn’t answer.

Sarah reached toward the camera.

“I found out Mark had done this before.”

The screen changed.

Documents appeared.

Photos.

Messages.

Reports.

My heart sank.

There were names.

Several women.

Several dates.

Several accusations.

A pattern.

A lifetime of excuses.

Then Sarah said the words that changed everything.

“Emily…”

I looked at the screen.

“If you are still with him…”

She paused.

“Please understand something.”

“He didn’t choose you because you were special.”

My chest tightened.

“He chose you because you were alone.”

The room went silent.

I felt tears burning my eyes.

Because that was the cruelest part.

Not because it was true.

Because a small part of me wondered if it was.

Sarah continued.

“You have a father who loves you.”

My eyes moved toward Robert.

“You have people who would protect you.”

A pause.

“Don’t let Mark convince you that you have nobody.”

The video ended.

The kitchen remained silent.

Nobody looked at Mark.

Everyone looked at me.

And for the first time…

I understood something.

Mark’s greatest weapon was never his anger.

It was isolation.

He had spent years convincing women they were alone.

But he made one mistake.

He hurt me in front of the one person who would never abandon me.

My father.

Robert slowly closed the laptop.

Then he looked at Mark.

“Six years.”

Mark said nothing.

“You knew about this video?”

“No.”

“You knew about Sarah’s accusations?”

“No.”

My father looked at Diane.

“And you?”

Diane’s lips trembled.

“I was protecting my son.”

My father nodded slowly.

Then said:

“No.”

His voice was quiet.

“You were protecting a criminal.”

The room went still.

Mark suddenly changed.

The nervous smile disappeared.

The fake kindness disappeared.

His eyes became cold.

“You think you can destroy me?”

Nobody answered.

He stepped closer.

“You have no idea who you’re dealing with.”

My father looked at him.

“I spent thirty years putting men like you away.”

Mark smiled.

“Men like me?”

He leaned closer.

“You really think this is about me?”

My father frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Mark looked around the room.

Then smiled.

A dangerous smile.

“Ask your daughter what she found in my office last month.”

My blood froze.

Because I had found something.

A hidden file.

A document.

Something Mark told me was “none of my business.”

Something I forgot about because I was too afraid.

My father looked at me.

“Emily?”

I couldn’t speak.

Because suddenly I realized…

The bruises were only the beginning.

And Mark wasn’t just hiding his violence.

May you like

He was hiding something much bigger.

TO BE CONTINUED…
