CHAPTER 8: The Plan He Thought I Would Never Find

For a few seconds, nobody spoke.
Not even Mark.
And that was the first time I realized something important.
He wasn’t afraid of being hated.
He wasn’t afraid of being exposed.
He was afraid of losing control.
And tonight…
He was losing it.
My father looked at Diane.
“Where is the document?”
Diane’s hands trembled.
“I don’t have it.”
Mark immediately stepped forward.
“Mom.”
The warning in his voice was obvious.
But Diane didn’t stop.
“I saw it.”
She looked at me.
“I should have told you sooner.”
I stared at her.
A part of me wanted to be angry.
Another part of me was too exhausted.
“How long did you know?”
Her eyes filled with shame.
“Two weeks.”
My heart sank.
“Two weeks?”
She nodded.
“I found it when I was cleaning his office.”
I laughed quietly.
A broken laugh.
“Everyone keeps finding things.”
I looked around the room.
“Everyone keeps knowing things.”
My voice shook.
“And somehow, I’m always the last person to find out.”
My father walked closer.
“Diane.”
She looked at him.
“What exactly did you see?”
She swallowed.
“A plan.”
The room went still.
“What kind of plan?” my father asked.
Diane looked at Mark.
And for the first time…
She looked afraid of him.
“His plan for Emily.”
Mark suddenly exploded.
“Stop.”
Everyone turned.
His calm mask was gone.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.”
Diane flinched.
And that reaction said everything.
My father noticed.
The officer noticed.
Everyone noticed.
“Mr. Collins,” the officer said.
“You need to remain calm.”
Mark laughed.
“Calm?”
He pointed at everyone.
“You’re all standing here judging me.”
My father looked at him.
“You admitted assault.”
Mark ignored him.
“You’re destroying my life.”
I looked at him.
And something inside me finally changed.
Because for months…
I had been afraid of his anger.
But standing there…
Watching him panic…
I realized something.
He was not powerful.
He was just someone terrified of consequences.
“Diane.”
My father’s voice was firm.
“Tell us.”
She looked down.
Then whispered:
“The document was a financial plan.”
My stomach tightened.
“Financial plan?”
She nodded.
“He had calculated everything.”
My father’s expression hardened.
“Everything?”
“Yes.”
She wiped her eyes.
“How much Emily owned.”
“Her inheritance.”
“Her savings.”
“Her house.”
The room became cold.
“He knew exactly how much money he would get if something happened to her.”
I felt sick.
Because I remembered all the times Mark asked questions.
Not about my dreams.
Not about my feelings.
About money.
“When do you receive the inheritance?”
“Did your grandmother leave anything else?”
“Have you updated your insurance?”
At the time, I thought he was planning our future.
Now…
I realized he was planning mine without me.
My father looked at Mark.
“Did you create this plan?”
Mark didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Then Diane added:
“There was something else.”
Everyone looked at her.
She hesitated.
“What?”
Her voice dropped.
“He had already contacted a lawyer.”
My father frowned.
“For what?”
Diane looked at me.
“To prepare for a divorce.”
I felt my chest tighten.
Mark looked away.
My father noticed.
“Before tonight?”
Diane nodded.
“Months ago.”
I looked at Mark.
“You were planning to leave me?”
He stared back.
No apology.
No regret.
Just irritation.
“You were becoming difficult.”
The room went silent.
Even now.
Even now, he blamed me.
I looked at him.
“Difficult?”
He shrugged.
“You questioned everything.”
I stared.
“You mean I started noticing things.”
His jaw tightened.
My father picked up the documents.
“This is not just abuse.”
He looked at the officer.
“This is a pattern of manipulation, financial exploitation, and potential fraud.”
The officer nodded.
“We’ll need copies of everything.”
Mark laughed.
“You think this proves anything?”
The officer looked at him.
“Yes.”
Mark shook his head.
“You don’t know the whole story.”
Again.
Those words.
The same words he had used all night.
But this time…
I wasn’t afraid.
“Then tell it.”
Everyone turned.
I had spoken.
My voice was calm.
Mark looked surprised.
“Emily?”
I stepped forward.
“You’ve spent years telling everyone your version.”
I looked directly into his eyes.
“So tell the truth.”
He stared at me.
For once…
He didn’t have an answer.
My father placed a hand on my shoulder.
Not to protect me.
To remind me I wasn’t alone.
And that difference mattered.
The officer picked up the folder.
“We need to take Mr. Collins in for questioning.”
Mark’s expression changed.
“You can’t.”
The officer raised an eyebrow.
“Why not?”
Mark looked around.
Searching for someone.
Anyone.
Then his eyes stopped on Diane.
“Mom.”
Diane looked away.
The woman who had protected him his entire life…
Was finally done.
As the officer walked Mark toward the door, he stopped.
He looked back at me.
And the coldness returned.
“You think you won?”
I didn’t answer.
He smiled.
“You don’t even know what started this.”
My father stepped forward.
“Enough.”
But Mark looked only at me.
“The first time I met you wasn’t an accident.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
He smiled.
“I knew exactly who you were.”
The room froze.
My father’s expression changed.
“Emily…”
Mark continued:
“You think I chose you because I loved you?”
A pause.
“I chose you because of your father.”
The air disappeared from the room.
My father went completely still.
“What did you say?”
Mark smiled.
And for the first time that night…
My father looked afraid.
Not angry.
Afraid.
Because whatever Mark was about to reveal…
Had nothing to do with my marriage.
May you like
It had started long before I met him.
