CHAPTER 7: The Web Unravels

Sarah felt sick.

Mark hadn't just been a deadbeat husband. He had been planted in her life by Michael Sterling to monitor her. To make sure Arthur never reached out. To ensure the Sterling fortune stayed under Michael's control.

"You were in danger your whole life," Arthur said quietly. "Mark was sent to keep you close. To keep you compliant. To make sure you never asked questions about your past."

Ryan stepped forward. "Is the fraud ring still active?"

Arthur shook his head. "Michael died in prison two years ago. But his associates are still out there. Mark was one of them. Lena was another—she was working with Mark to expose Arthur's location."

Sarah sat down heavily. "So Lena wasn't just jealous. She was ordered to humiliate me?"

"Yes. To drive you into a vulnerable position where Michael's men could step in."

Ryan's face was dark. "But Mark didn't count on me being there that night."

Arthur nodded. "You saved my daughter's life, Ryan. If she had been left isolated and broken, they would have taken her. Forced her to sign over her inheritance."

Sarah looked at her father—the man who had sacrificed everything to protect her.

"Why didn't you contact me sooner?"

"I was waiting for Michael to die," Arthur admitted. "I was waiting for it to be safe. I never stopped watching over you, Sarah. I paid for your college. I bought your first car. I put money into your accounts anonymously. I was always there. You just didn't know it."

Sarah cried.

For the first time in her life, she understood the truth.
