CHAPTER 6: The Hidden Connection

Months passed. Lena was convicted and sentenced to five years in federal prison.

Mark had vanished completely—until Sarah received a letter at her office.

It was from a private investigator. The letter read:

"Sarah Voss,

I've been hired by someone claiming to be your biological father. He says he's been trying to reach you for years. He is extremely wealthy and wants to meet you. His name is Arthur Sterling.

Please contact me at your earliest convenience."

Sarah stared at the letter.

Arthur Sterling.

The name was familiar. He was a billionaire real estate mogul. He had been on the cover of Forbes. He was also the father who had abandoned her mother when Sarah was just a baby.

Her mother had died when Sarah was eighteen. She had never spoken about Arthur. She had only said: "He chose money over us."

Now, after all these years, he wanted to meet?

Sarah told Ryan that night.

"Are you going to see him?" Ryan asked.

"I don't know. He abandoned my mother. He left her to die poor and alone. Why should I give him the time of day?"

Ryan was quiet for a moment.

"Because closure is rare, Sarah. If you don't go, you'll always wonder why. I'll come with you."

They met Arthur Sterling in a private suite at the Ritz-Carlton.

He was an old man now. Frail. His eyes filled with tears the moment he saw Sarah.

"You look exactly like your mother," he whispered.

Sarah didn't soften. "You don't get to say that. You left her. You left us."

Arthur nodded slowly. "I know. And I've regretted it every day. But I didn't leave because I wanted to. I left because I was threatened."

Sarah frowned. "Threatened?"

"The fraud ring I exposed twenty years ago—they targeted my family. They said they would kill you and your mother if I didn't walk away. I went into hiding. I gave up everything to protect you."

Sarah felt her world tilt. "You're lying."

Arthur pulled out a file.

Inside were photographs. Evidence. Witness statements.

The fraud ring was run by a man named... Michael Sterling.

Arthur's own brother.

And Michael had been working with a young lawyer named Mark Thompson.

Sarah's ex-husband.
