Chapter 3: The Woman They Tried To Humiliate

The investigation lasted four months.

It uncovered far more than anyone imagined.

Nathan's mother hadn't simply hidden financial records.

She had secretly accepted millions in illegal consulting payments from investors my father spent twelve years exposing.

Nathan never knew.

He truly believed everything he built belonged to him.

Until it didn't.

The board removed him unanimously.

His company merged into the investment group my father had created.

The luxury penthouse disappeared.

The sports cars disappeared.

Even the ballroom where they'd humiliated me...

Belonged to one of our investment companies.

Months later...

Nathan asked to meet.

One last conversation.

He looked exhausted.

"I never stopped loving you."

I smiled sadly.

"You stopped long before that night."

He lowered his head.

"My mother lied to me."

I nodded.

"Yes."

"But you chose to believe the lie..."

I stood.

"...because it was easier than believing me."

He couldn't answer.

As I walked away, he quietly called my name.

"Harper..."

I turned.

"If I had defended you that night..."

He swallowed hard.

"...would we still be together?"

I smiled.

"No."

He frowned.

"Why?"

"Because a man shouldn't need to lose everything..."

"...before learning how to protect the woman he loves."

One year later...

My father finally came home.

Older.

Grayer.

But alive.

We stood together at the opening of the Quinn Foundation, helping entrepreneurs who had lost everything to financial fraud.

During the ceremony, a reporter asked,

"What was the hardest part of the last twelve years?"

My father smiled.

"Living without my daughter."

Then the reporter turned to me.

"And what was the greatest lesson?"

I looked across the crowd.

At families rebuilding their lives.

At people getting a second chance.

Then I answered.

"The people who try hardest to make you feel small..."

"...usually have the most to lose when you finally discover your own worth."

The applause echoed for nearly a minute.

And somewhere in the city...

Nathan finally understood.

He hadn't lost a wealthy fiancée.

He had lost the only woman who believed in him before the world ever did.
