Chapter 2: The Billion-Dollar Lie

Nobody moved.

Nathan frowned.

"What kind of joke is this?"

The man ignored him.

He walked straight toward me.

"My name is Edward Lawson."

He handed me a passport.

An old photograph.

And a sealed envelope.

The handwriting on the envelope froze my blood.

It was my father's.

Exactly as I remembered.

My hands trembled.

Impossible.

I opened it.

Harper,

If you're reading this...

Then I've finally found a way to come home.

Tears blurred my vision.

Edward spoke softly.

"Twelve years ago your father disappeared."

I whispered,

"The plane crash..."

He nodded.

"...was staged."

The room exploded.

Nathan's mother laughed.

"This is ridiculous."

Edward calmly opened another folder.

International court documents.

Corporate filings.

Photographs from Europe.

Asia.

South America.

For twelve years...

My father had secretly dismantled a criminal financial network that stole billions from investors.

He couldn't contact us.

Couldn't risk exposing our family.

Until now.

Edward smiled gently.

"He completed his mission."

Nathan folded his arms.

"So what?"

Edward turned toward him.

"So..."

He projected one final document.

Ownership records.

The investment fund that quietly financed Nathan's company.

The same company Nathan believed he owned.

The controlling shareholder...

Was Harper Quinn.

Every share.

Held in trust by her father.

Nathan slowly looked at me.

His face drained of color.

"No..."

Edward smiled.

"Yes."

But he wasn't finished.

Not even close.

Because another photograph appeared on the screen.

Nathan's mother.

Meeting privately with one of the businessmen my father had investigated.

The room became silent.

Then Edward quietly asked,

May you like

"Mrs. Pierce..."

"Were you planning to tell your son who actually paid for his success?"
