CHAPTER 1: THE WEDDING THAT NEVER HAPPENED

"She's richer."

My fiancé adjusted his tie. Looked me directly in the eyes. And smiled.

"Try not to take it personally."

The church went completely silent. I stood frozen at the altar. Still wearing my wedding dress. Still holding my bouquet. Still trying to understand what was happening.

"What?"

Ethan Keller sighed dramatically. Like I was wasting his time.

"Come on, Sophie."

He pointed toward the front row. A stunning blonde woman stood up. Designer dress. Diamond earrings. Perfect makeup. Perfect smile. Everyone recognized her.

Madison Blackwell. The daughter of billionaire real estate mogul Charles Blackwell. The woman Ethan had supposedly never met. The woman currently carrying his child.

The room exploded. Gasps. Whispers. Phones appeared instantly. Recording. Always recording.

Madison placed a hand on her stomach. Smiling.

"I didn't want it to happen this way."

I laughed. A broken laugh. The kind that comes right before your heart shatters.

Ethan walked toward her. Away from me. Away from the altar. Away from the last four years of our lives.

"You'll be fine."

The casual cruelty stunned everyone.

My father rose from his seat. His face red with anger.

"Ethan, sit down."

Ethan laughed. "No."

The church became very quiet. Then Ethan delivered the sentence that destroyed everything.

"Your daughter was never my future."

He wrapped an arm around Madison.

"She was just my backup plan."

My father lunged. People grabbed him. Guests screamed. Chaos erupted.

Then Charles Blackwell slowly stood up. The billionaire smiled. Satisfied. Victorious. As if he'd already won.

Then he looked at my father and said:

"You should've stayed in your lane, mechanic."

The church erupted with laughter.

Charles enjoyed every second of it. Because everyone believed my father was just a small-town mechanic.

Everyone. Including me.

My father stared at Charles. Then smiled. A strange smile. A dangerous smile. The kind I'd never seen before.

And that was the exact moment I realized...

Something wasn't right.

I didn't scream. I didn't cry. I didn't run. I just stood there, in my wedding dress, watching my fiancé walk away with another woman. Watching the man who had promised to love me forever leave without looking back.

Four years. Four years of my life. Four years of planning a future with someone who had been using me as a placeholder.

I thought about all the nights I had stayed up late, waiting for him to come home. All the meals I had cooked. All the sacrifices I had made. All the times I had defended him to my friends, to my family, to myself.

And for what? So he could leave me at the altar for someone richer?

Madison looked back at me. Just once. Her smile was triumphant. Victimless. Like she had won a prize.

And maybe she had.

But she had also made a mistake.

She had underestimated me.

I didn't know it yet. But I was about to find out who I really was.

And when I did, I was going to destroy all of them.

My father walked toward me. He put his hand on my shoulder.

"Sophie," he said. "Let's go."

I nodded.

I didn't speak.

I couldn't.

I just walked out of the church, still wearing my wedding dress, still holding my bouquet, still trying to process what had just happened.

The paparazzi were waiting outside. Phones flashing. Voices shouting.

"Sophie! Sophie! What happened?"

"Did you know about the affair?"

"Is it true Ethan left you for Madison Blackwell?"

I didn't answer.

My father guided me into the car. I sat in the passenger seat and stared out the window.

The church disappeared behind me. The guests. The cameras. The humiliation.

Everything was gone.

But I was still here.

And I was going to make sure they all regretted what they had done.

"Dad," I said. "Who are you?"

He looked at me.

"What do you mean?"

"I saw your face. When Charles said that. You looked like you wanted to kill him."

"I did want to kill him."

"Why?"

He was quiet for a long moment.

"Because he's the reason I lost everything."

I stared at him.

"What do you mean?"

"Your mother. My business. My life. He took all of it."

I had never heard my father talk like this. He had always been quiet. Patient. Kind. A mechanic who fixed cars and never complained.

But now he looked different. Harder. Angrier.

"Dad, what did he do?"

He pulled the car over.

"Sophie, I need to tell you something. Something I should have told you a long time ago."

"Tell me."

"Your mother didn't die in a car accident. She was murdered."

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"What?"

"Charles Blackwell murdered your mother. Because she knew the truth about him."

"What truth?"

"The truth about who I really am."

He looked at me.

"Sophie, I'm not a mechanic. I'm the son of a billionaire. And Charles Blackwell is my brother."

I stared at him.

"You're Charles Blackwell's brother?"

"Half-brother. But yes. We share the same father."

"But that would mean—"

"I walked away from the family fortune. I walked away from everything. Because I couldn't stand what Charles was doing."

"What was he doing?"

"He was running a criminal empire. Fraud. Embezzlement. Murder. He killed your mother because she found out the truth and was going to expose him."

I felt like the world was spinning.

"So everything I thought I knew—"

"Was a lie. I'm sorry, Sophie. I should have told you sooner. But I was trying to protect you."

"Protect me from what?"

"From him. From Charles. From the people he's hurt. I thought if I stayed quiet, he would leave us alone. But I was wrong."

I looked at my father.

The man who had raised me.

The man who had sacrificed everything to protect me.

The man who had been hiding who he really was my entire life.

"What do we do now?" I asked.

"Now," he said, "we fight."

"How?"

"We expose the truth. We take him down. We get justice for your mother."

"But how do we do that?"

He smiled. A cold smile. The smile of a man who had been waiting for this moment for decades.

"By using the one weapon he never saw coming."

"What's that?"

"You."

I stared at him.

"Me?"

"You're his niece. His blood. And you're the key to everything."

I didn't understand.

But I was about to.

And when I did, I was going to make sure Charles Blackwell regretted every single thing he had ever done.

I was going to make him pay.

For my mother.

For my father.

May you like

For everything.
