CHAPTER 13: THE LETTER FROM PRISON

A few weeks after the wedding, I received a letter from Mark.

It was the first time I'd heard from him in years.

Evelyn,

I heard you got married. I'm happy for you. David seems like a good man.

I also wanted to apologize again. For everything. I've been in therapy for years now, and I've finally started to understand why I did the things I did.

I was broken. I was angry. I was afraid. And I took it out on the people I loved.

I don't expect you to forgive me. I don't expect you to understand. But I wanted you to know that I'm sorry. I'm sorry for everything.

Take care of Lily. She deserves the best.

Mark

I read the letter and felt something shift inside me.

Not forgiveness, exactly.

But acceptance.

I wrote back:

Mark,

Thank you for your letter. I appreciate your honesty.

I don't forgive you. Not yet. But I'm grateful that you're trying to be better. I hope you continue to heal.

Take care.

Evelyn

It was a small step.

But it was a step forward.
