CHAPTER 10: THE FUTURE

Lily is sixteen now.

She's doing well in school and planning for college. She wants to be a therapist, to help other kids who've been through trauma.

She's strong. She's resilient. She's everything I ever hoped she'd be.

And I'm proud of her.

Last week, she asked me something.

"Mom, do you think you'll ever get remarried?"

I laughed.

"I don't know. Maybe. Why?"

"Just wondering."

"Would you be okay with that?"

"I want you to be happy."

I reached over and took her hand.

"Right now, I am happy. I have you. I have my health. I have a life I love. That's enough for me."

She smiled.

"Me too."

We sat on the porch together, watching the sunset, just like we'd done so many times before.

And I thought about how far we'd come.

The journey hadn't been easy.

May you like

But we'd made it.

And that was everything.
