CHAPTER 15: THE FOREVER

It's been five years since Garrett died.

I still live in the mansion. I still write in my journal. I still visit his grave.

But I've also found peace.

Catherine and Mark are like family to me now. We have dinner together every week. We laugh, we argue, we love.

They've changed.

And I've changed too.

Last week, Catherine gave me a gift.

It was a photograph of Garrett, taken the day we got married.

On the back, she had written:

The day my father was finally happy.

I looked at the photograph and cried.

Because I knew it was true.

Garrett had been happy.

And I had been happy too.

I put the photograph on the nightstand beside my bed.

And every night, I look at it and remember.

I remember the boy behind the bleachers.

I remember the man who found me fifty-three years later.

I remember the husband who loved me until the very end.

And I know, without a doubt, that our love was real.

That's my forever.

That's my legacy.

And I wouldn't trade it for anything.
