CHAPTER 14: THE GOODBYE

I went to the cemetery on the first anniversary of Garrett's death.

I brought a bouquet of flowers and a copy of my journal.

I sat beside his grave and read to him.

"Garrett, I miss you every day," I said. "I miss your laugh. I miss your hand in mine. I miss the way you looked at me like I was the most important person in the world."

I paused, wiping my eyes.

"But I'm okay. I'm taking care of myself. And I'm taking care of your children."

I laughed softly.

"They're not as bad as I thought they were. They just needed time."

I looked up at the sky.

"I love you," I said. "I've always loved you. And I'll always love you."

I stood up and walked away.

And I didn't look back.

Because I knew, wherever he was, he was watching me.

And he was proud of me.
