Chapter 9 - Court

Lily came home at sunrise wrapped in Dad's coat.

Her hair was tangled. Her cheeks were dirty. There was a red mark on her wrist where Paul had held her too tightly. But she was alive.

I ran to her before anyone could stop me. She ran too. We crashed into each other in the hallway and fell onto the rug, both of us crying.

"I'm sorry," she sobbed.

"Stop saying that."

"I went to Mom."

"You came back."

"Daddy came."

"We all came."

Sarah knelt and wrapped both of us in her arms. Lily leaned into her. That made Dad cry. Not loudly. Just one hand over his eyes while his shoulders shook.

Detective Harris arrived later with news.

Paul had confessed enough to protect himself. Vivian had planned everything. Sarah's disappearance. The fake death certificate. Amanda's marriage to Dad. The custody papers. The attempt to take us.

Vivian had wanted Dad's house, money, and company. Amanda was her way in. But Amanda had become jealous. Cruel. Careless. Vivian decided to remove all of us. First me. Then Lily. Then Dad, through false claims and forged papers.

Dad looked sick. "She used her own daughter."

Detective Harris nodded. "And her granddaughter."

Amanda sat in jail when she gave her statement. Ms. Romero went with Dad. Sarah stayed home with us.

When Dad came back, he looked exhausted.

"She admitted to the neglect," he said quietly.

I stared at him. "Why?"

He sat across from me. "Because Paul told the police Vivian planned to blame her for everything. Amanda wants a deal."

Of course. Even truth came wrapped in selfishness.

But then Dad said, "She also asked me to tell Lily she loves her."

Lily was asleep on the couch. Her hand clutched mine.

I looked at her. "Does she?"

Dad's eyes filled. "I think she does. Badly. Wrongly. But yes."

I thought about that for a long time. Amanda loved Lily. Amanda hurt Lily. Amanda hated me. Amanda took my mother. Amanda cried when Lily was taken.

The world was too complicated for seven years old.

Court happened fast after that.

Vivian was arrested at a private airport with fake passports, cash, and documents for two children. Me and Lily.

Seeing her in court made my stomach hurt. She wore a gray suit and looked calm. Like none of this touched her.

Amanda looked different. No makeup. No hard smile. She cried when Lily entered the courtroom holding Dad's hand. Lily did not go to her.

I sat between Sarah and Claire.

Dad testified first. His voice shook when he talked about the recordings. About the noodles. About the fake orders. About Sarah.

Sarah testified next. She told the court about the parking garage, the clinic, the forged papers, the years of trying to come home.

Amanda cried the whole time. Vivian did not.

Then it was my turn.

Dad squeezed my hand before I walked to the front. The judge was kind. She said I could stop anytime.

I looked at Amanda. Then Vivian. Then Dad. Then Sarah.

I told the truth.

"I was hungry when Dad was gone."

My voice shook.

"I didn't ask for chicken because Amanda got mad. Lily tried to give me food. Amanda said Lily wasn't my real sister. But she is."

Lily cried softly behind me.

I kept going.

"Amanda told me my mom left because I was hard to love. That was a lie."

Sarah covered her mouth.

I looked at the judge.

"My mom looked for me. Dad came back. Lily helped me. I don't want to be taken away from them."

The judge nodded. She wrote something down.

Then she said I could sit.

I walked back to my family and sat between Dad and Sarah. Lily reached across and took my hand.

No one spoke. We did not need to.

When the hearing ended, the judge ruled that Amanda would not regain custody. Vivian would face charges. Paul would go to prison.

Lily and I would stay with Dad.

Sarah would stay too.

I looked at her. She was crying.

"You're staying?" I whispered.

She nodded. "If you want me to."

I did not answer with words. I just hugged her.

She held me tight.

May you like

"I'm not leaving again," she said.

I believed her.
