Chapter 3 - The Police Arrive

My aunt Claire arrived before the police.

She came in wearing jeans, a coat over her pajamas, and the expression of a woman who had been ready to fight before she reached the driveway.

Dad opened the door. Claire stepped inside and went straight to me. She knelt in front of me.

"Ethan, sweetheart."

I tried to smile.

Her eyes moved over my face. My shoulders. My wrists. The way my shirt hung loose. She did not ask if I was okay. Adults always asked that when they did not know what else to say. Claire knew better.

She opened her arms.

I walked into them. She held me like I was something precious that had almost been dropped.

Then Lily came over, crying again. Claire pulled her in too.

"Both of you," she whispered. "I've got both of you."

Amanda stood near the kitchen doorway, arms crossed.

"This is ridiculous," she said. "Daniel is overreacting."

Dad was at the table with his laptop open. The memory card was inside. He had not played the footage yet. Not in front of me. Not in front of Lily. That somehow made it worse. The truth was sitting there like a storm waiting to break.

A police car pulled up. Then another.

Amanda's face changed the moment she saw them. She wiped her eyes. She loosened her hair. She became soft. Wounded. Misunderstood.

Two officers stepped inside with a woman from child services named Ms. Patel.

Amanda rushed toward them.

"Thank God you're here. My husband is having some kind of breakdown."

Dad turned slowly. Officer Grant looked at him.

"Sir, are there weapons in the home?"

Dad nodded. "Locked in a safe. I have a permit. I won't touch them."

Amanda cried harder. "He threatened me."

"No, he didn't!" Lily shouted.

Everyone looked at her. She was shaking. Her little hands were fists.

"Mom is lying."

Amanda gasped. "Lily."

"No!" Lily screamed. "You are lying! You hurt Ethan when Daddy leaves!"

My heart stopped.

Dad went still.

Claire's arms tightened around me.

Ms. Patel crouched near Lily. "What do you mean, honey?"

Lily looked at me. Then at Dad. Then at Amanda.

"She makes him eat noodles. Or bread. Sometimes nothing if he spills. She says he has to earn food because he isn't hers."

Amanda's face twisted. "That is not true."

Lily sobbed. "You locked him in the laundry room when he cried."

I could not breathe.

I had not told anyone that. Not Dad. Not Claire. Nobody.

Dad looked at me. "Ethan?"

I stared at the floor.

My silence answered.

Dad made a sound I had never heard before. Half pain. Half rage.

Officer Grant stepped closer to Amanda. "Ma'am, please sit down."

She pointed at Lily. "She is a child. She doesn't understand discipline."

Ms. Patel's voice cooled. "Children understand hunger."

Dad opened the laptop. "Watch the footage."

Amanda lunged.

Claire moved faster. She caught Amanda by the shoulders and shoved her back.

"Try it," Claire said. "Please."

Officer Grant stepped between them.

Dad played the video. I did not look. I stared at my shoes. But I heard enough.

Amanda's voice from last Tuesday.

"You want dinner? Then stop asking when your father is coming home."

My own voice. Small. "I'm hungry."

Her laugh. "You're always hungry."

A door closing. A lock clicking. Me crying softly from inside the laundry room.

Dad stopped the video.

No one spoke.

The silence was worse than the recording. It stretched across the room like something alive. Ms. Patel was the first to move. She walked to Amanda and took her arm.

"Mrs. Miller, you need to come with us."

Amanda pulled back. "No. I'm not leaving my daughter."

"You are not being given a choice."

Amanda looked at Lily. "Baby, tell them I'm a good mom."

Lily stepped behind Dad. She did not answer.

Amanda's face crumpled. But it was not sadness. It was fury.

Officer Grant took her other arm. They led her toward the door. At the threshold, Amanda turned her head.

"You'll regret this," she said.

Dad did not look away.

"I already do," he said. "I regret not seeing it sooner."

The door closed behind her.

Lily burst into tears. Dad picked her up and held her while she sobbed. Claire sat on the floor with me and put her hand on my back.

"You're safe now," she said.

I wanted to believe her.

May you like

But I kept thinking about what Amanda had said. You'll regret this.

I did not know then how much more we still had to lose.
