Chapter 2 - The Recording

Amanda stared at the device like it had turned into a snake.
For one second, nobody moved. Lily stood in the hallway crying silently. I sat at the table with my fork still in my hand.
Dad's voice came again.
"I said step away from my son."
Amanda blinked hard. Then her face changed. She smiled. Not a real smile. The kind she used for neighbors and teachers.
"Daniel," she said softly. "You're misunderstanding."
Dad did not answer right away. That scared her more than yelling would have. I knew my father's silences. There was the tired silence. The sad silence. The thinking silence. This was different. This was the silence before a door slammed.
"I heard everything," he said.
Amanda reached for the device. I pulled it against my chest. Her eyes flashed.
"Ethan, give that to me."
Dad's voice sharpened. "Do not touch him."
Amanda's hand stopped in midair.
Lily ran to me and climbed into the chair beside mine. She wrapped both arms around my shoulders.
"He's hungry, Daddy," she cried. "Mom won't let him eat chicken."
I felt my face burn. I hated that Dad heard that. I hated that anyone knew. But another part of me felt something loosen inside my chest. Someone knew. Finally, someone knew.
Amanda laughed nervously. "She's six. She exaggerates."
Lily shouted, "I don't!"
Dad said, "Where is Ethan's lunch?"
Amanda looked at my bowl. "He has food."
"Where is the food I bought?"
No answer.
"Amanda."
Her voice hardened. "You are not here. You don't understand how difficult it is managing two children."
"Two children?" Dad repeated.
Amanda looked at me with hatred she forgot to hide. "One child and your son."
Dad's voice dropped. "My son is a child."
She went quiet.
I heard a car horn through the device. Dad was driving. Fast.
"You're coming home?" I asked. My voice sounded tiny.
"Yes, buddy. I'm already on my way."
Amanda's head snapped up. "What? Daniel, you are twelve hours away."
"Not anymore."
Her face drained again.
Dad continued. "I came back early to surprise the kids. I was five minutes from the house when the alert came through."
Amanda grabbed the back of a chair. The whole lie she had lived in while he was gone began cracking around her.
I looked down at the device.
"Dad, I didn't press it."
"I know," he said gently. "It turns on if it hears certain words. Words I hoped I was wrong to worry about."
Amanda whispered, "You recorded me?"
"I protected my child."
"You spied on your wife."
"You starved my son."
"I did not starve him."
"He has lost weight every time I've come home this year."
I froze. Dad had noticed? All those times he hugged me longer. All those times he asked if I was eating. All those times Amanda answered for me. He had noticed.
Amanda stepped away from the table. "You have no right to accuse me."
"I have every right."
A sound came from outside. Tires on gravel.
Lily gasped. "Daddy!"
Amanda ran to the window. A black truck pulled into the driveway. Dad's truck.
My chest filled so fast I could hardly breathe.
Amanda rushed toward me. "Listen to me," she hissed. "You will tell him this was a misunderstanding."
Lily stood in front of me. "No!"
Amanda raised her hand.
The front door opened.
"Don't," Dad said.
His voice was quiet. Deadly.
Amanda's hand froze in the air.
Dad stepped inside. He looked at me first. Then at Lily. Then at Amanda. His face was pale. His jaw was tight.
"Step away from my children," he said.
Amanda's hand dropped. She tried to smile.
"Daniel, please. Let me explain."
"No."
She flinched.
Dad crossed the room and knelt in front of me. His eyes moved over my face, my shoulders, my wrists. I saw something break in him.
"I'm sorry," he whispered. "I'm so sorry."
I did not know what to say. So I hugged him.
Lily climbed into his lap. He held both of us at once. Amanda stood alone in the kitchen, watching.
"I'm calling the police," Dad said.
Amanda's face went white.
"You can't."
"I can. I should have a long time ago."
She started to cry. Real tears this time. But I did not feel sorry for her.
Dad pulled out his phone.
"Daniel, please. I'll leave. I'll go. Just don't—"
"Go pack a bag," he said. "You can wait outside for the police."
Amanda did not move.
"Now," Dad said.
She flinched again. Then she walked toward the bedroom. Lily started to follow her. Dad caught her hand.
"Not yet, sweetheart. Stay with me."
Lily looked confused. "Is Mommy in trouble?"
Dad was quiet for a moment. Then he said, "Yes."
Lily's face crumpled. She buried it in Dad's shoulder. He held her tighter.
I sat beside them and put my hand on Lily's back.
"It's okay," I whispered.
She shook her head. "It's not."
May you like
I did not know how to argue with that.
So we sat together on the floor, waiting for the police, while Amanda packed her things in the other room.
