Chapter 5 - School Pickup

The teacher at the gate looked confused.

That was when fear truly hit me. Adults with papers can make other adults ignore crying children.

Amanda held the court order high.

"It says I have visitation," she said. "My husband is keeping my daughter from me."

The teacher, Mrs. Hale, reached for the paper.

Lily squeezed my hand so tightly it hurt.

"Don't let go," she whispered.

"I won't."

Vivian stepped closer. Her perfume smelled sharp, like flowers left too long in a vase.

"Mrs. Hale, is it?" she said. "You don't want to interfere with a lawful custody order."

Mrs. Hale looked at me. Then Lily. Then the two men behind Vivian. Something in her face changed.

She did not hand Lily over.

"Wait here," she said.

Amanda's smile vanished. "I don't have time for this."

Mrs. Hale stepped backward, keeping herself between us and Amanda.

"Children, inside."

Amanda grabbed Lily's backpack. Lily screamed. I pulled. Amanda pulled harder.

The strap snapped. Lily fell against me. I stumbled, but Mrs. Hale caught us both.

Then she shouted louder than I had ever heard a teacher shout.

"Lockdown!"

The school doors opened. Another teacher rushed out. Students were pulled inside.

Amanda screamed, "She is my daughter!"

Vivian pointed at Mrs. Hale. "You just made a terrible mistake."

Mrs. Hale's voice shook, but she stood firm. "Then I'll make it on camera."

She pointed above the gate. A school security camera stared down at us.

Amanda froze.

The black device in my pocket buzzed. Dad's voice came through, breathless.

"Ethan?"

I grabbed it. "Dad, she's here."

"I know. Stay inside. I'm two minutes away."

Amanda heard him. Her face twisted. "You little spy."

Mrs. Hale pushed us behind her.

Vivian snapped at the men, "Go."

They moved toward the gate.

Then sirens sounded. Not far. Close.

Dad's truck turned the corner so fast the tires screamed. A police car followed. Then another.

Dad jumped out before the truck fully stopped. He ran toward us.

Amanda backed away. "Daniel, I have an order."

Dad took the paper from Mrs. Hale's shaking hand. He read it once. Then looked at Officer Grant.

"This is not signed by Judge Mercer."

Officer Grant took it. His face hardened. "This signature is wrong."

Vivian went pale.

Amanda said, "That's impossible."

Dad turned the paper over. Ms. Romero stepped from the second police car. She had followed Dad.

Her voice was calm and deadly. "It's also missing the emergency case number. And Judge Mercer has been in surgery since yesterday morning."

Amanda's mouth opened. No words came out.

Vivian tried to leave. Officer Grant stopped her.

"Ma'am, stay where you are."

One of the men ran. A second officer caught him by the car. The other raised his hands.

Lily was sobbing now. "Daddy!"

Dad scooped her up, then pulled me into his other side. I buried my face in his coat. His heart was pounding.

"Are you hurt?" he asked.

"No."

Lily cried, "She tried to take us."

Dad's arms tightened. "I know."

Amanda cried too, but her tears sounded angry. "She is my child."

Dad looked at her. "Then why did she have to run from you?"

That shut her up.

The police searched Vivian's car. They found two packed child-sized bags. One pink. One blue.

My stomach dropped when I saw the blue one.

It had my name written on it.

Dad saw it too. His face went white. He held me and Lily tighter.

"Get them in the car," he told Claire.

Claire took us both by the hands and led us away. I looked back once.

Amanda was in handcuffs. Vivian was arguing with an officer. Dad was talking to Ms. Romero.

Then the door closed, and I could not see them anymore.

In the car, Lily leaned against me. She was still crying.

"Are you okay?" I asked.

She shook her head.

May you like

"Me neither," I said.

We sat together in the back seat while Claire drove us home.
