Chapter 7 - What Robert Found

Caroline arrived the next morning.

Emily had not seen her mother in twelve years.

When Caroline entered the hospital room, both women froze.

Emily remembered her at thirty-seven.

Dark hair.

Strong posture.

The scent of lavender soap.

Now Caroline was fifty.

Gray threaded through her hair.

Lines surrounded her eyes.

Emily did not move.

Caroline whispered, “You look like your father.”

Emily immediately began crying.

“So do you.”

Caroline stepped forward.

Emily raised one hand.

“Not yet.”

Caroline stopped.

“Okay.”

They sat apart.

Then Emily asked the question that had been haunting her.

“What did Dad discover?”

Caroline looked toward Michael.

“You should hear this too.”

Michael stood near the door.

He had been allowed inside only because Emily requested it.

Caroline explained.

Robert Bennett was a forensic engineer.

Fourteen years earlier, Reed Development built the Harbor Point residential complex.

A retaining wall failed during construction.

Two workers died.

Internal engineers had warned the concrete mixture was defective.

Management ignored them.

“Who?”

“Harold Mercer and two project executives.”

“Jonathan?” Michael asked.

“No.”

Michael exhaled.

Caroline continued.

Jonathan discovered the cover-up after Robert was hired independently by insurers.

Robert had evidence that Harold falsified reports.

He planned to testify.

Then threats began.

Phone calls.

A dead animal outside their house.

Emily’s car tires slashed while she was at college.

Caroline and Robert considered withdrawing.

Robert refused.

Then their house burned.

Caroline escaped.

Robert did too, badly injured.

Emily frowned.

“He died three days later.”

Caroline looked at her.

“That’s what you were told.”

Emily went cold.

“What?”

“Robert survived.”

Again.

Her family seemed built from false funerals.

“How long?”

“Eleven months.”

Emily stared.

“You both lived?”

“Yes.”

“Where was he?”

“Federal protection.”

“Why didn’t he contact me?”

“He wanted to.”

“Then why didn’t he?”

“Because someone reached him.”

Caroline’s voice shook.

“Robert became convinced there was a leak inside the investigation.”

“What happened?”

“He disappeared from protection.”

“Then?”

“His body was found two weeks later.”

Emily closed her eyes.

This time the death was real.

“How?”

“Car accident.”

Michael looked toward Caroline.

“Harold?”

“We never proved it.”

But Robert left evidence.

A report hidden with Jonathan.

Jonathan spent years quietly rebuilding the case.

Harold suspected.

That was why Jonathan created the trust.

Not just to protect money.

To make sure future control of Reed Development could not remain with anyone tied to the old cover-up.

Emily whispered, “The trust is evidence.”

“Yes.”

Caroline nodded.

“The voting shares give the trustee access to internal archives.”

Michael finally understood.

Jonathan had not merely left wealth to his grandchild.

He had created a legal mechanism allowing Emily to force open corporate records Harold had buried.

“What did Robert’s report say?” Emily asked.

Caroline looked grim.

“Harold wasn’t acting alone.”

Michael’s body stiffened.

“Who else?”

“Someone on the Reed board.”

“Who?”

“I never saw the final page.”

“Jonathan did?”

“Yes.”

Michael remembered his father’s last year.

Increasingly suspicious.

Firing executives.

Arguing with board members.

Then dying unexpectedly.

Perhaps he had been closer than anyone realized.

Thomas called.

Police had found another hidden compartment in Jonathan’s study.

Behind a framed architectural plan was a safe.

Inside:

Robert Bennett’s original engineering report.

Emily touched it carefully.

She found the final page.

Three names.

HAROLD MERCER.

PETER CALDWELL.

ANDREW REED.

Michael stared.

Andrew Reed was Jonathan’s younger brother.

Michael’s uncle.

Chairman of Reed Development.

Still alive.

Still running the company.

Michael whispered, “Uncle Andrew.”

Emily looked toward him.

Andrew had comforted Michael at Jonathan’s funeral.

Supported Sophia financially.

Approved Harold’s continued role after Jonathan died.

And had spent eighteen months encouraging Michael to stay away from “old estate complications.”

Caroline looked at the report.

“Jonathan must have discovered Andrew was involved.”

Michael felt cold.

Then Thomas sent another recovered audio file.

Jonathan speaking with Andrew one week before his death.

Jonathan said, “I know what happened to Robert.”

Andrew replied, “Then you know why digging this up will destroy us.”

Jonathan answered:

“No, Andrew. It will destroy you.”

The recording ended.

If Jonathan confronted his own brother days before dying unexpectedly, had the Reed family been protecting the wrong person all along?
