Chapter 13 - The Marriage Andrew Prepared to Break

Emily remembered dozens of moments differently once she knew.

Andrew asking casually whether she felt “overwhelmed” managing family finances.

Andrew telling Michael that pregnancy could make women “unusually emotional.”

Andrew privately suggesting Emily wanted control of Reed Development.

Small comments.

Never enough to sound malicious.

Together, they formed a pattern.

Michael remembered more.

Andrew warning that Emily was “isolating him from family.”

Andrew defending Sophia every time Emily set boundaries.

Andrew telling him Jonathan trusted Emily “too much.”

For years, Andrew had been creating a version of Emily in Michael’s mind.

Ambitious.

Controlling.

Suspicious of the Reed family.

Then Sophia screamed from the staircase.

Michael reacted exactly as trained.

He looked at Emily across Rachel’s kitchen.

“I let him do it.”

Emily shook her head.

“He influenced you.”

“I chose.”

She was quiet.

“Yes.”

Michael appreciated that she did not soften it.

“I’m starting therapy.”

Emily looked surprised.

“For anger?”

“For why I believed being protective gave me permission to stop thinking.”

She looked down.

“That’s probably a good place to start.”

It was not reconciliation.

But it was the first conversation they had without accusation.

Meanwhile Reed Development’s board discovered the Mason trust had automatically acquired voting shares eighteen months earlier.

Emily formally accepted trusteeship.

That gave her power to inspect internal records.

Andrew’s attorneys immediately challenged Mason’s paternity.

Michael publicly confirmed the independent DNA test.

News spread.

Reporters appeared outside Rachel’s house.

Emily hated it.

Mason did not know why cameras were interested in him.

Emily and Michael agreed to tell him the truth before someone else did.

They sat together.

Emily spoke first.

“You know Dad adopted you?”

“Yes.”

“There’s something we learned.”

Michael continued carefully.

“Turns out I was your biological dad too.”

Mason stared.

“How?”

Michael nearly laughed from nerves.

Emily said, “We met before we realized who each other were.”

Mason thought.

“So Dad adopted me even though he was already my dad?”

“Yes.”

“That’s weird.”

“Extremely,” Michael said.

Mason smiled.

Then became serious.

“Did Mom lie?”

Emily’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I was scared.”

Mason looked between them.

“Everyone in this family gets scared a lot.”

Michael almost laughed.

Emily did.

For the first time in weeks.

Mason accepted the truth with a child’s strange combination of curiosity and practicality.

“Do I get two birthdays?”

“No.”

“Then nothing changes.”

He returned to his game.

The adults sat stunned.

That evening Emily activated her inspection rights.

The corporate archive opened.

Thousands of files.

Paul Garner helped.

They found Harbor Point.

Vendor fraud.

Harold’s shell companies.

Andrew’s signatures.

Then another folder.

BENNETT.

Emily stopped.

Inside were surveillance records on Robert and Caroline.

Payment logs.

Private investigators.

And a document dated eleven months after the house fire.

SUBJECT: ROBERT BENNETT.

STATUS: LOCATION CONFIRMED.

Authorized by Andrew Reed.

Emily’s hands shook.

Another file.

A photograph of Robert entering a motel.

Another.

His car.

Then a payment to a contractor two days before Robert’s fatal crash.

Michael whispered, “Oh God.”

Police reopened Robert’s death investigation.

The contractor still existed.

Retired.

Name:

Gavin Pike.

Detective Torres found him.

He admitted Andrew hired him.

“For what?”

“To follow Robert.”

“Did you cause the crash?”

Gavin immediately shook his head.

“No.”

“Then what happened?”

“I was supposed to scare him.”

“How?”

“Force him off the road.”

Emily stopped breathing.

Gavin looked sick.

“I clipped his bumper. His car spun harder than I expected.”

“You killed him.”

“I know.”

“Did Andrew order that?”

“He said make sure Robert understands he can’t go back to federal investigators.”

“Did he say kill?”

“No.”

Again, criminal intent would matter legally.

Morally, Emily already knew enough.

Then Gavin added:

“Andrew wasn’t the person who paid me.”

“Who?”

“Jonathan Reed.”

Michael stared.

“No.”

Gavin nodded.

“The money came from Jonathan’s account.”

Emily looked at Michael.

Jonathan had supposedly been helping Robert.

Yet the payment that financed the fatal intimidation came from him.

Had Jonathan Reed secretly ordered the operation that killed Emily’s father while later pretending to help uncover the truth?
