Chapter 10 - Before They Were Married

Michael drove to Rachel’s house but remained outside.

He called Emily.

“I found something.”

Her voice hardened.

“What?”

“A DNA report.”

Silence.

“Mason.”

Long silence.

Michael closed his eyes.

“So it’s true.”

Emily whispered, “Yes.”

His chest tightened.

“I’m his biological father.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“You know how.”

“Emily.”

She laughed bitterly.

“You seriously don’t remember?”

Michael froze.

Then memory surfaced.

Eight years earlier.

A charity conference in Chicago.

One night.

A woman he met after a dinner.

Dark hair.

They talked for hours.

He never got her last name.

The next morning she was gone.

Michael sat back against his car.

“That was you?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me when we met again?”

“When we met again, you didn’t recognize me.”

“I had been drinking that night.”

“I know.”

“That isn’t an excuse.”

“No.”

“Did you recognize me?”

“Immediately.”

Michael felt betrayed.

“Why say Mason’s father was Eric?”

“Eric was my fiancĂ©.”

Michael went silent.

Emily explained.

Eric Lane had been with her for three years.

They broke up temporarily.

During that separation, Emily attended the Chicago conference.

She met Michael.

One night.

Then reconciled with Eric.

Weeks later she discovered she was pregnant.

Eric knew the timeline.

He chose to raise Mason as his.

“He died before Mason was born.”

“Yes.”

“Did you know I was the father?”

“Not certainly.”

“But you suspected.”

“Yes.”

“Then we met four years later.”

“At Jonathan’s foundation event.”

“You knew exactly who I was.”

“Yes.”

“Why marry me without telling me?”

Emily’s voice cracked.

“Because by then you loved Mason.”

Michael stared through the windshield.

He remembered their early relationship.

Mason climbing into his lap.

Calling him Mike.

Then Dad.

Michael proposing adoption before he proposed marriage.

Emily had cried.

He thought from happiness.

Maybe some of it had been fear.

“You let me adopt my own son.”

“Yes.”

“That is insane.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

“I was terrified you would think I trapped you.”

“So you lied instead.”

“Yes.”

Michael almost laughed.

Everyone had secrets.

Sophia.

Jonathan.

Caroline.

Harold.

Andrew.

Now Emily.

But one truth separated them.

Emily’s lie did not justify what Michael had done on the staircase.

He knew better than to use it.

“Does Mason know?”

“No.”

“Who ran this DNA test?”

“I don’t know.”

“The report is in Andrew’s files.”

Emily went quiet.

Andrew had discovered Mason’s paternity.

That meant the trust situation changed.

Jonathan’s trust belonged to Michael’s first biological child.

Not unborn baby.

Mason.

Seven years old.

The twenty-eight percent voting stake had already vested the day Jonathan died.

But because nobody knew Michael was Mason’s biological father, the activation had gone unnoticed.

Andrew did know.

That explained why Mason had become leverage.

It also changed Sophia’s motive.

If the unborn baby was not actually the first beneficiary, harming Emily’s pregnancy would not destroy the trust.

Andrew had lied to Sophia.

He manipulated her into attacking Emily for a legal effect that did not exist.

Why?

To make Sophia criminally vulnerable.

To control her permanently.

Michael felt sick.

“Emily, we have to tell Torres.”

“I know.”

“And Mason eventually.”

“Yes.”

“Not now.”

“No.”

They agreed on that much.

Then Emily asked quietly, “Are you angry?”

“Yes.”

“I understand.”

Michael looked toward Rachel’s house.

“But I’m not coming inside and demanding answers.”

Emily was silent.

“I learned that one too late.”

Her voice softened slightly.

“Goodnight, Michael.”

“Goodnight.”

Detective Torres confirmed the DNA report appeared authentic but required independent verification.

Michael voluntarily provided a sample.

Mason’s sample could only be used with Emily’s consent.

She agreed through counsel.

Result:

Michael was Mason’s biological father.

Jonathan’s trust had therefore activated eighteen months earlier.

Caroline was not successor trustee yet.

Emily was primary trustee.

That meant Emily already controlled twenty-eight percent of Reed Development on Mason’s behalf.

Without knowing it.

Andrew had spent eighteen months hiding that fact.

Why?

Because once activated, Emily gained inspection rights to every corporate record.

Robert Bennett’s Harbor Point files.

Jonathan’s investigation.

Andrew’s fraudulent contracts.

Everything.

The unborn baby had never been the true threat.

Emily was.

Then Paul Garner discovered something else.

Jonathan had known Mason was Michael’s biological son.

Michael stared.

“How?”

Paul handed him a letter.

Jonathan wrote:

Michael may not know yet. Emily may not be ready to tell him. That is their matter.

The trust is Mason’s by blood, but Emily must control it until truth is safe.

Michael closed his eyes.

Jonathan had known.

And deliberately protected Emily’s secret.

Then the letter continued.

If Andrew discovers Mason’s paternity before Michael does, the boy will become the center of everything.

Michael looked toward Detective Torres.

Andrew had discovered it.

Perhaps years ago.

How far had Andrew gone to keep a seven-year-old boy from inheriting the power to expose him?
