Chapter 14 - Jonathan’s Worst Secret

Michael refused to defend his father before seeing evidence.

That surprised Emily.

Months earlier he would have.

Now he said, “Follow the money.”

Paul did.

The payment originated from Jonathan’s account.

But authorization metadata came from Harold Mercer’s office.

Harold admitted it.

“I used Jonathan’s account.”

“Why?”

“Andrew wanted distance.”

“So Jonathan didn’t know?”

“No.”

Michael exhaled.

Emily did not.

Robert was still dead because Reed money had been used.

Harold continued.

“Jonathan discovered it six months later.”

“What did he do?”

“He tried to turn Andrew in.”

“Why didn’t he?”

“Andrew threatened Sophia.”

Sophia had been pregnant with Ava then.

Andrew knew.

He told Jonathan that if he went to authorities, the scandal involving underage Sophia and Daniel Mercer would become public.

Jonathan hesitated.

That hesitation lasted years.

Emily felt bitter.

“He protected Sophia.”

Michael looked at her.

“Yes.”

“And my father stayed dead.”

“Yes.”

No excuses.

Jonathan eventually tried to correct it.

He gathered evidence.

Protected Caroline.

Created the Mason trust.

But he never escaped the original moral failure.

He chose family reputation over justice.

Michael saw himself in it.

Again.

The pattern.

Protecting a Reed first.

Truth second.

Emily asked Harold:

“Did Jonathan ever meet my father?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Two weeks before Robert died.”

“Why?”

“To apologize.”

Emily stared.

“For what?”

“For not exposing Andrew earlier.”

Paul found a recorded memo Jonathan made afterward.

Jonathan sounded broken.

“Robert told me protecting Sophia did not give me the right to sacrifice everyone else.”

Emily closed her eyes.

Her father had said exactly what she wished someone had told Michael before the staircase.

Then Jonathan continued:

“He was right.”

Jonathan had spent the next thirteen years trying to undo one cowardly decision.

Sometimes secretly.

Sometimes too slowly.

He never fully succeeded.

Emily began to understand Jonathan differently.

Not hero.

Not villain.

A man who failed catastrophically and spent the rest of his life trying to repair consequences that could not be reversed.

Michael listened beside her.

“He was afraid.”

Emily nodded.

“He still made the choice.”

“Yes.”

That became the standard for everyone.

Sophia’s fear mattered.

Her shove still mattered.

Michael’s manipulation mattered.

His slap still mattered.

Jonathan’s regret mattered.

Robert’s death still mattered.

Andrew’s intent would be decided in court.

The evidence was overwhelming.

Harbor Point fraud.

Robert’s fatal intimidation.

Jonathan’s medication tampering.

Sophia’s manipulation.

Emily’s attempted drugging.

Corporate surveillance.

Andrew was denied bail.

Harold negotiated cooperation but faced serious charges.

Sophia remained charged for pushing Emily, though prosecutors acknowledged she had been manipulated and blackmailed.

Then the forensic review of the staircase footage revealed another detail.

Sophia had not merely waited for Emily.

Andrew had texted her.

NOW.

The shove happened thirty-two seconds later.

That connected him directly to the assault plan.

Sophia broke down when confronted.

“He told me Emily would ruin Ava’s life.”

“How?”

“He said once Mason’s trust activated, Emily would expose the payments Harold used for Ava.”

“Which payments?”

“Money from Reed shell companies.”

Sophia believed Ava’s foster family could be accused of receiving stolen funds.

Andrew threatened to drag a thirteen-year-old girl into criminal proceedings.

So Sophia obeyed.

Not justified.

But understood.

Then Emily’s doctor called.

Her latest ultrasound showed a concern.

The placenta had developed a small area of separation likely connected to the fall.

Not immediately catastrophic.

But Emily would need strict monitoring and probably early delivery.

Michael went pale.

“Is the baby okay?”

“For now.”

Emily heard those words.

For now.

Sophia’s shove had consequences still unfolding.

Andrew’s conspiracy was becoming a legal case.

The major financial secrets were exposed.

Robert’s story was finally known.

Jonathan’s mistakes were understood.

But Emily’s child remained physically tied to the violence on the stairs.

Three days later, she woke at 2:17 a.m. with severe pain.

Rachel called emergency services.

Michael arrived at the hospital minutes after the ambulance.

Emily was already being taken toward surgery.

He stopped outside the doors.

She looked at him from the gurney.

Fear in her eyes.

Michael did not grab her hand.

He asked.

“Can I come?”

Emily stared.

Then held out her fingers.

“Yes.”

As doctors rushed them forward, alarms sounded around the baby monitor.

Had the fall Sophia caused finally triggered the crisis everyone had feared from the moment Emily hit the bottom of the stairs?
