CHAPTER 2: The Woman Who Knew Everything

The elderly woman's name was Eleanor.

She claimed to have been Sarah's mother's closest friend.

For hours, they sat together in a quiet café.

Then Eleanor revealed an impossible truth.

Sarah's mother had never died.

She was alive.

Sarah nearly dropped her coffee.

"That's impossible."

Eleanor shook her head.

"No. Your father lied."

According to Eleanor, Sarah's parents had been involved in a bitter custody battle shortly after Sarah was born.

Her mother wanted to leave the country.

Her father feared he would never see his daughter again.

Then one day, Sarah disappeared.

Each parent believed the other had taken her.

For years, both searched desperately.

Neither knew the truth.

Someone else had taken the child.

Someone inside the family.

Sarah felt sick.

Everything she believed about her life was falling apart.

Then Eleanor handed her an old photograph.

It showed a young woman standing beside a lake.

The resemblance was undeniable.

Same eyes.

Same smile.

Same face.

It was her mother.

On the back of the photograph was an address in California.

Sarah booked a flight the next morning.

She needed answers.

But when she arrived at the address, a neighbor delivered devastating news.

The woman who lived there had passed away just six months earlier.

Sarah was too late.

Or so she thought.

Because before leaving, the neighbor handed her a small package.

"It's what she wanted you to have if you ever came looking."

Inside was a video recording.
