Chapter 6 - Grace's Recovery. .

Over the following months, Grace worked carefully through the psychological aftermath of her confinement, attending regular therapy sessions with a trauma specialist, Dr. Miranda Osei, who specialized in helping survivors process exactly the kind of calculated, sustained manipulation and imprisonment Grace had endured.

"The isolation and gaslighting represent particularly insidious forms of trauma," Dr. Osei explained during one of Ethan's occasional joint sessions with Grace. "Being told repeatedly that Ethan had abandoned interest in her wellbeing, while simultaneously being physically confined and sedated — that combination creates especially complex psychological wounds requiring careful, patient healing."

"I still sometimes wake up genuinely believing I'm back in that room," Grace admitted during one particularly difficult session. "The disorientation from those days sometimes returns unexpectedly, even now, months later."

"That's an entirely normal trauma response," Dr. Osei reassured her. "Healing from this kind of experience isn't linear. You'll likely continue experiencing difficult moments even as your overall trajectory continues improving."

Ethan, throughout this period, remained fiercely present and supportive, adjusting his work schedule considerably to ensure he never again allowed extended absence to create the kind of vulnerability his mother had so calculatedly exploited.

"I've restructured my role at Caldwell Meridian Group," he told Grace one evening, several months into her recovery. "I'm stepping back from international travel entirely for at least the next two years. I want to be genuinely present, not just physically in the same city, but actually available whenever you or Samuel need me."

"I appreciate that," Grace said, "though I also don't want you sacrificing your entire career because of what happened."

"This isn't sacrifice," Ethan said firmly. "This is recognizing what actually matters most. I nearly lost both of you because I allowed ambition and misplaced trust to create dangerous distance. I'm not repeating that mistake, regardless of what it costs professionally."

Samuel, meanwhile, continued thriving throughout these months, growing into a healthy, happy infant showing no lasting physical effects from the trauma surrounding his birth, though both Ethan and Grace remained carefully, deliberately vigilant about ensuring his continued safety and wellbeing.

"I want additional security measures," Ethan told Grace during one particularly honest conversation about their ongoing precautions. "Not out of paranoia, but genuine, careful protection given everything that's already happened."

"I agree completely," Grace said. "I don't think I'll ever feel entirely comfortable again without knowing exactly who has access to our home, our schedule, our son's safety."

They installed comprehensive security systems throughout their new home, established careful protocols regarding who could access their property, and gradually, methodically rebuilt a sense of genuine safety that had been so thoroughly shattered throughout Grace's eleven days of confinement.
