Chapter 3 - What the Hospital Confirmed. .

Over the following forty-eight hours, as Grace remained hospitalized under close medical observation, additional testing revealed the full, horrifying scope of what she'd endured throughout her eleven days of confinement.

"Toxicology results confirm the presence of a sedative medication in her system," Dr. Patricia Kim, the attending physician, explained during a private consultation with Ethan. "Consistent with what your wife described — regular administration through food or water, sufficient to keep her disoriented and compliant without rendering her completely unconscious."

"How could my mother possibly have access to something like that?" Ethan asked, still struggling to fully process the calculated, sustained nature of what Evelyn had orchestrated.

"That's a question for law enforcement to investigate," Dr. Kim said carefully. "But I want to focus on Grace's continued recovery. The good news is that both she and the baby appear to be stabilizing well, given proper hydration and nutrition. The concerning contractions have decreased significantly since her admission."

"When can she come home?" Ethan asked.

"I'd like to keep her hospitalized through the remainder of the week for continued monitoring," Dr. Kim said. "Given the trauma involved, I'm also recommending psychological evaluation and support, both for the immediate crisis and for longer-term processing of everything she's endured."

Grace, when Ethan returned to her room, sat propped against pillows, considerably steadier than she'd appeared during that terrifying rescue, though the haunted exhaustion in her eyes suggested the psychological impact of her ordeal remained far from resolved.

"Detective Ramirez wants to speak with me," she told Ethan quietly. "About formal charges against Evelyn. I told them I'm ready, whenever they need my statement."

"You don't have to do this immediately," Ethan said gently. "Whatever pace you need, Grace, we'll manage this carefully."

"I want to do it now," Grace said firmly, something steely and determined evident beneath her exhaustion. "I don't want her walking free for even one additional day, knowing what she did to me, to our baby."

Detective Elena Ramirez arrived that afternoon, gentle but thorough in her questioning, carefully documenting Grace's account of the eleven days — the initial deception luring her into the storage room, the construction of the barred enclosure, the sedated food and water, the psychological manipulation designed to convince her that Ethan had genuinely abandoned interest in her wellbeing.

"We've also recovered considerable physical evidence from the property," Detective Ramirez explained. "Security footage showing construction workers installing the bars, receipts for the sedative medication purchased under a false prescription, and Martin Hale's own statement, which corroborates significant portions of what you've described."

"Martin knew?" Ethan asked, feeling fresh betrayal at this revelation regarding their longtime, trusted butler.

"He claims he only fully understood the severity of the situation partway through," Detective Ramirez said carefully. "He's cooperating extensively with our investigation, which will likely factor into whatever charges he might otherwise face for his own complicity."

"What happens to my mother now?" Ethan asked.

"She's currently in custody," Detective Ramirez said. "Given the severity of the charges — unlawful imprisonment, administering controlled substances without consent, and potential charges related to endangering your unborn child — I expect the district attorney's office to pursue this case aggressively."
