Chapter 5 - The Birth. .

Grace went into labor naturally, two weeks after her rescue, at thirty-eight weeks — considerably calmer and more controlled than the frightening, forced contractions that had accompanied her initial hospitalization following eleven days of confinement.

Ethan remained by her side throughout the entire labor, gripping her hand through each contraction with the same fierce, protective devotion that had driven him to break down that barred enclosure's lock with his bare hands if necessary.

"You're doing incredibly," he told her, watching her navigate labor with remarkable strength despite everything her body had endured throughout the preceding weeks.

After nine hours, their son, Samuel Ethan Caldwell, arrived healthy and strong, his cries filling the delivery room with overwhelming, cathartic joy after everything the family had survived.

"He's perfect," Grace whispered, exhausted but radiant, holding Samuel against her chest for the first time.

Ethan, tears streaming freely, studied his newborn son with profound gratitude, understanding completely how close they'd come, weeks earlier, to a considerably more devastating outcome.

"You saved him," he told Grace softly. "You protected him through everything, even when you had every reason to lose hope."

Detective Ramirez visited briefly the following day, providing an update on the ongoing legal proceedings against Evelyn. "The grand jury returned formal indictments yesterday," she reported. "Unlawful imprisonment, administration of controlled substances without consent, and endangering the welfare of an unborn child. Given the severity of the evidence, I expect this case to proceed relatively quickly toward trial."

"What about Martin?" Ethan asked.

"He's cooperating fully as a witness for the prosecution," Detective Ramirez said. "Given his cooperation and the fact that he ultimately assisted with your rescue by revealing the west wing's location, prosecutors are considering more lenient treatment in his case, though he'll likely still face some formal accountability for his initial complicity."

Grace, listening to this update while Samuel nursed peacefully nearby, felt a complicated mixture of relief and continued processing regarding everything that had happened. "I want to testify," she said firmly. "When the trial begins, I want to tell the court exactly what those eleven days felt like."

"Whatever you're ready for, whenever you're ready for it," Ethan said gently. "You've already shown remarkable strength throughout this entire ordeal, Grace. Nobody expects you to rush toward anything before you're genuinely prepared."

Their small family — Ethan, Grace, and now baby Samuel — left the hospital three days later, returning not to Caldwell House, which Ethan had immediately arranged to sell following Grace's rescue, but to a new, considerably smaller home Ethan had secretly purchased during Grace's hospital recovery, deliberately choosing a space entirely disconnected from the trauma of her confinement.

"I never want either of us to set foot in that house again," Ethan told Grace as they settled into their new home for the first time. "This is our fresh start, completely separate from everything that happened there."
