Chapter 9 - THE LAST SIT-DOWN

The sit-down was held in a neutral warehouse in Brooklyn,
a cold,
industrial space that smelled of oil and old secrets.
Damiano sat at the head of the table,
his navy suit pristine once again,
with Rafael standing behind him like a statue.
The dons of the other four families were there,
their faces grim and suspicious.
Don Castri was the first to speak,
his voice raspy with age and greed.
"We heard about Marchetti,
Damiano."
"You wiped out a whole line for a maid's brat."
"Is it true?"
Damiano looked at Castri,
his eyes cold and unwavering.
"It's true,"
Damiano said.
"And I would do it again."
"The girl is my daughter now."
"The mother is under my protection."
"And anyone who thinks they can use them to get to me,"
"should look at what's left of the Marchetti estate."
The dons looked at each other,
the weight of his words settling in the room.
They knew that Damiano Verrone was a man of his word,
and they knew that he was more dangerous now than he had ever been.
Before,
he had nothing to lose.
Now,
he had a reason to kill.
"We're not here to fight,
Damiano,"
Castri said,
holding up his hands.
"We just wanted to know where the lines are drawn."
"The lines are drawn at my doorstep,"
Damiano said,
standing up from the table.
"The fundraiser is back on for next year."
"And my daughter will be attending."
"If you want peace,"
"you will treat her like a princess."
"If you want war,"
"you will treat her like a target."
He walked out of the warehouse,
the meeting over before it had even truly begun.
He had set the terms,
and he knew the other families would obey.
They were wolves,
yes,
but they knew when a bigger wolf had found a reason to hunt.
He drove back to the Hamptons,
the city lights of Manhattan fading in the rearview mirror.
He thought about the life he was building,
the strange,
beautiful hybrid of mafia power and domestic peace.
He arrived at the safe house and found Elena on the porch,
watching the stars.
"Is it over?"
she asked as he joined her.
"It's over,"
Damiano said.
"We're going back to the estate next week."
"But we'll keep the security."
"And we'll keep the library."
Elena looked at him,
her eyes soft in the moonlight.
"Why did you do it,
Damiano?"
"Why did you say yes to a little girl?"
Damiano looked at the ocean,
his heart full of the ghost of his past and the hope of his future.
"Because she asked nicely,"
he said,
a small,
genuine smile touching his lips.
"And because I was tired of being alone."
He went inside and found Mia asleep in her bed,
the red crayon heart pinned to the wall above her head.
He kissed her forehead,
the mafia boss becoming the daddy,
and he knew that he had made the right choice.
The world would still be a dangerous place,
May you like
and he would still be a man of the shadows,
but he would never be a ghost again.
