Chapter 8 - THE HAMPTONS HIDEAWAY

The safe house in the Hamptons was a fortress disguised as a beach house,

surrounded by sand dunes and high-tech security systems.

Damiano stood on the deck,

looking out at the gray Atlantic,

the sound of the waves a soothing balm to his frayed nerves.

It had been a week since the attack on the estate,

and the city was still reeling from the disappearance of the Marchetti family.

Damiano had stayed in the shadows,

directing his empire from a distance,

his focus entirely on the two women inside the house.

Elena was in the kitchen,

preparing a meal that wasn't for a gala,

her movements slower,

more relaxed.

Mia was on the beach,

digging in the sand under the watchful eye of Rafael,

her laughter carrying on the salt wind.

She still called him "Daddy,"

and Damiano no longer flinched when he heard it.

"The other families are asking for a sit-down,"

Rafael said,

joining him on the deck.

"They're nervous,

Damiano."

"They want to know if the 'one day' is permanent."

Damiano looked at his hand,

the wedding ring still in the drawer back in Manhattan,

and he thought about the emptiness of his life before the girl.

"It's permanent,"

Damiano said,

his voice final.

"I'm adopting her."

Rafael looked surprised,

but he didn't argue.

"And the mother?"

"Elena stays,"

Damiano said,

his gaze moving to the kitchen window.

"She is the only person who knows how to handle the child."

"And she's the only person who's seen me bleed and didn't run."

He walked down to the beach,

his feet sinking into the cold sand,

and he sat down beside Mia.

She showed him a seashell she had found,

a broken piece of pearl that shimmered in the sun.

"It's a treasure,

Daddy,"

she said,

placing it in his hand.

"Like the red heart?"

he asked.

"Better,"

she nodded.

Damiano looked at the shell,

and then at the girl,

realizing that he had found a treasure he didn't deserve.

He had spent his life taking things,

building an empire of fear and blood,

but he had never truly possessed anything of value until now.

"Mia,"

he said,

his voice serious.

"I have to talk to you about the daddy game."

She stopped digging,

her eyes searching his.

"Is the day over?"

she asked,

her lip beginning to tremble.

"No,"

Damiano said,

reaching out to take her hand.

"I want to know if you want to keep borrowing me."

"Not for a day,"

"but for all the days."

Mia’s eyes went wide,

and she threw her arms around his neck,

nearly knocking him over into the sand.

"Yes!"

she screamed.

"Yes,

Daddy!"

Damiano held her,

the salt air and the sound of the ocean washing over them,

and he felt a sense of peace that he had forgotten existed.

He was a mafia boss,

a killer,

and a ghost,

but he was also a father.

And as the sun set over the Hamptons,

the ghost finally found his way home.
