Chapter 10 - THE PERMANENT DADDY

A year had passed since the night of the fundraiser,

and the Verrone estate was once again filled with the elite of New York.

The crystal chandeliers were back,

the marble floors were polished to a mirror finish,

and the string quartet was playing a more cheerful tune.

But this time,

the guest of honor wasn't a museum board member or a rival don.

It was Mia,

wearing a pink silk dress and a real tiara,

celebrating her seventh birthday.

The grand hall was filled with balloons and laughter,

a sight that the Upper East Side had never seen before.

Damiano stood by the fireplace,

watching the children play,

his presence still commanding but no longer cold.

He wasn't wearing his wedding ring from the drawer,

instead,

he wore a small silver band on his right hand,

a gift from Mia that she had made in her art class.

Elena was beside him,

her role as housekeeper long gone,

replaced by a position of trust and affection that no one dared to question.

They weren't married,

not yet,

but they were a family in every way that mattered.

"She looks happy,"

Elena whispered,

leaning her head on his shoulder.

"She is happy,"

Damiano agreed,

his eyes fixed on the girl.

Rafael walked over,

carrying a large box wrapped in red paper.

"The gift from the Castri family has arrived,"

Rafael said,

smirking.

"It's a pony."

Damiano laughed,

a sound that was now common in the mansion.

"Tell him she wants a racecar next year."

Mia ran up to them,

her face flushed with joy,

and she grabbed Damiano’s hand.

"Can we cut the cake now,

Daddy?"

she asked.

"Whatever the princess wants,"

Damiano said,

picking her up and carrying her toward the table.

He looked around the room,

at the powerful men who were now trying to outdo each other with birthday presents,

and he felt a sense of ultimate victory.

He had borrowed a daughter for a day,

and in return,

she had given him a lifetime.

He had protected her from the shadows,

and in return,

she had brought him into the light.

The king was still on his throne,

but the crown was no longer made of thorns.

It was made of red crayon hearts and seashells.

As he blew out the candles with his daughter,

the mafia boss made a wish for a future that didn't involve blood.

And for the first time in his life,

he believed it was possible.

The one day was over,

but the forever had just begun.

And in the Verrone estate,

the silence was finally broken by the sound of home.

The Upper East Side watched,

the world trembled,

but inside the iron gates,

there was only love.

Damiano Verrone was no longer the man who made the underworld shake.

He was the man who made a little girl smile.

And to him,

that was the only power that mattered.

The Red Heart was still on his desk,

but the contract was forever.

And they lived happily ever after,

in the shadows and the sun.

The end of the story,

and the start of the life.

Mia Verrone,

daughter of the king.

And Damiano Verrone,

May you like

the daddy who stayed.

The end.
