Chapter 6 - THE BATTLE FOR THE BASEMENT

The mansion was no longer a home,

it was a kill zone,

filled with the sounds of shouting and the smell of gunpowder.

Damiano moved through the back corridors,

Mia clutched tightly to his chest,

her face buried in his neck.

She didn't cry,

she was too terrified to make a sound,

her small body trembling like a bird in a cage.

"Rafael,

get the car to the tunnel!"

Damiano ordered into his radio.

"I'm taking her to the basement!"

He ducked around a corner just as a hail of bullets tore through the plaster,

the white dust clouding the air.

He fired back,

his aim true,

taking down two men in black masks who had entered through the kitchen.

He felt a sharp pain in his side,

a grazing shot that tore through his navy suit,

but he didn't stop.

He reached the service elevator and slammed the button,

the slow grind of the machinery feeling like an eternity.

Inside the elevator,

he looked down at Mia,

his heart hammering with a ferocity he hadn't felt in a decade.

"Look at me,

Mia,"

he commanded,

his voice firm and steady.

"I'm going to play a game with you."

"It's called the 'Quiet Room.'"

"You have to stay in the secret cupboard in the basement,"

"and you can't make a sound until I come back for you."

"Like hide and seek?"

she whispered,

her eyes wide with terror.

"Exactly like hide and seek,"

Damiano said,

trying to force a smile.

The elevator doors opened to the basement,

a maze of wine cellars and storage rooms.

He led her to a hidden door behind a row of vintage Barolo,

a safe room he had built for his own wife years ago.

He tucked her inside,

giving her the red crayon heart he had carried from his desk.

"Hold this,"

he said,

"it's your shield."

"I'll be back soon,

princess."

He shut the door,

locking it with a code only he and Rafael knew,

and he turned back to the elevator.

The beast was out of the cage now,

and the Upper East Side was about to see why Damiano Verrone was king.

He moved through the basement like a ghost,

ambushing Marchetti’s men with a cold,

methodical violence.

He didn't use his gun unless he had to,

preferring the silent efficiency of his knife,

leaving a trail of bodies in his wake.

By the time he reached the grand hall,

the floor was stained with more than just wine,

and the crystal chandeliers were shattered on the marble.

Silvio Marchetti stood at the center of the room,

holding Elena by the hair,

a pistol pressed to her temple.

"Where is the girl,

Damiano?"

Silvio screamed,

his face twisted with desperation.

"Give her to me,"

"and I'll let the maid live!"

Damiano stepped into the light,

his navy suit soaked in blood,

his eyes burning with a fire that seemed to come from hell itself.

"You made a mistake,

Silvio,"

Damiano said,

his voice a low,

deadly whisper.

"You came into my house."

"You frightened my daughter."

May you like

"And now,"

"you're going to die."
