Chapter 6 - Locker 408

The storage facility manager did not want to let us anywhere near Unit 408.
That changed when Nora arrived with a court order.
It changed faster when two investigators from the attorney general’s office arrived behind her.
Evelyn’s locker was on the fourth floor.
The metal door rolled up with a sound like thunder.
Inside were twelve archive boxes.
A printer.
A portable document scanner.
Three burner phones.
And a framed wedding photograph of Adrian and me turned face down on top of a filing cabinet.
“That’s subtle,” Priya muttered.
We opened nothing ourselves.
The investigators documented every box.
One of them called out labels as evidence techs photographed them.
“VOSS MERIDIAN — LEGACY DEBT.”
“HALE — SIGNATURE SET.”
“MARA — PERSONAL.”
My skin went cold.
There was a box with my name on it.
Inside were copies of bank forms, old Christmas cards, a home refinance document, passport applications, tax signatures, birthday notes I had written to Adrian.
Signature samples.
Years of them.
Vanessa’s box contained the same.
So Evelyn had collected both of us.
Why forge Vanessa’s name if Vanessa was helping her?
One investigator held up a sealed envelope.
“Ms. Hale — original prenup draft.”
Nora looked at me.
“Original?”
The envelope was opened on camera.
Inside was a prenup from eight years earlier.
Adrian and Vanessa had almost married before he met me.
I knew that.
I did not know the prenup contained a clause granting Vanessa a ten-percent interest in any company Adrian controlled if he ended their engagement after she relocated for him.
He had ended it.
She had never enforced the clause.
At least not publicly.
Priya flipped to the last page.
“No signature from Adrian.”
Ethan was not with us. He was back at Nora’s office with a sitter and Luis.
I was glad.
Because in the next box, we found copies of private school psychological notes about him.
Notes the school had never released to Adrian.
And beside them, a typed strategy memo.
I read one line and felt something in me go very still.
CHILD PROFILE MAY SUPPORT MATERNAL INSTABILITY NARRATIVE.
Nora took the page from my hand.
“Don’t.”
“I’m fine.”
“You are not fine.”
She was right.
I wanted to break something.
Instead, I sat on the concrete floor and pressed my palms together until they stopped shaking.
Then one of the investigators said, “We’ve got a device.”
A laptop.
Old. Scratched. No charger.
The sticker on the bottom read E.VOSS.
They bagged it.
As they did, my phone buzzed.
Vanessa.
One message.
I NEED TO TALK TO YOU WITHOUT ADRIAN.
Then a second.
