Chapter 14 - Evelyn Stops Pretending

Evelyn joined the board call as if she had been invited.

“Since we’re all here,” she said, “let’s be efficient.”

Adrian looked sick.

“Mother, hang up.”

“No.”

“Hang up.”

She ignored him.

Her face on the screen was calm, almost bored.

“Mara, your father and I built the safeguards because we both knew Adrian had no discipline.”

Adrian flinched.

She saw it and kept going.

“He could sell. He could charm. He could walk into a room with nothing and leave with fifty million dollars.”

“You say that like it’s a compliment,” I said.

“It was. Until he believed the money proved he was smarter than everyone who gave it to him.”

Adrian stood. “Enough.”

Evelyn turned to him.

“You wanted Vanessa. I gave you Vanessa. You wanted Mara gone. I gave you a settlement structure. You wanted liquidity. I created it.”

His mouth opened.

“You forged documents.”

“Yes.”

The boardroom went dead quiet.

The corporate lawyer beside me actually dropped his pen.

Evelyn continued.

“You approved invoices you did not read. You signed transfer schedules because I put yellow tabs on them. Do not become ethical because you finally noticed the hand holding the knife.”

Adrian looked like she had slapped him.

I should have enjoyed it.

I didn’t.

It was ugly.

All of it.

“Where is the Zurich money?” Priya asked.

Evelyn looked straight into the camera.

“Safe.”

“From whom?”

“Everyone.”

“Mara’s father?”

A pause.

There.

First crack.

Evelyn’s expression tightened by half an inch.

Samuel Drake leaned forward.

“Arthur Vale discovered the Zurich structure before he died, didn’t he?”

Evelyn’s eyes went cold.

“Arthur discovered many things too late.”

My chair scraped backward.

“What does that mean?”

Evelyn did not answer.

I stepped closer to the screen.

“My father died of a heart attack.”

“He did.”

“Then what does ‘too late’ mean?”

Adrian looked between us.

For once, he seemed genuinely lost.

Evelyn said, “It means he wanted to unwind our arrangement. He threatened to expose everything. I convinced him not to.”

“How?”

She looked away.

Just for a second.

A human second.

Then she recovered.

“Legally.”

The word was too clean.

Nora, standing behind me, typed something on her phone.

A moment later my screen lit up with her message.

DON’T PUSH. LET HER TALK.

So I sat down.

Evelyn relaxed.

That was her mistake.

She kept talking.

And by the time she realized the attorney general’s investigators had joined the call silently, she had already admitted the Zurich account existed.

Then Dana Cho unmuted.

“Mrs. Voss, thank you. We’ll take it from here.”

Evelyn’s face went blank.

Behind her, Adrian whispered one word.

“Mom?”

May you like

And for the first time in his life, she looked afraid.
