Chapter 13 - One Dollar

The emergency board meeting began at 7:00 the next morning.

Adrian tried to stop it at 6:52.

His lawyers sent a letter claiming my trust’s conversion rights were “antiquated, coercive, and commercially absurd.”

At 6:57, Samuel Drake replied with one sentence.

Then you should not have signed them.

At 7:03, my voting control activated.

Fifty-one percent.

Not ownership of all the money.

Not a magic takeover.

Voting control under a debt conversion clause triggered by fraudulent asset transfer.

Enough to call the meeting.

Enough to suspend Adrian as CEO pending investigation.

He appeared by video from his office.

His face filled one wall of the boardroom.

“You cannot do this.”

I sat at the head of the table, hands folded.

“I just did.”

“This is my company.”

One of the independent directors cleared his throat. “Actually, Adrian, that sentence may be part of the problem.”

Adrian ignored him.

“Mara, you have no idea how to run Voss Meridian.”

“Correct.”

That stopped him.

I continued. “Which is why I am not appointing myself CEO.”

Priya sat two seats away, watching him.

“I’m appointing an interim operations committee and an outside restructuring officer.”

Adrian’s face reddened.

“You think this is revenge?”

“No.”

It was, a little.

I hated that part of myself.

But the decision was still right.

“This is containment.”

He leaned close to the camera.

“You are destroying Ethan’s future.”

I almost laughed.

“You threw his future at me with a divorce settlement.”

“That was private.”

“So was your fraud.”

The board voted.

Four in favor.

One abstention.

Adrian was suspended.

The patent sale was rescinded.

All related-party transfers were frozen.

At 7:41, the general counsel tried to resign.

The restructuring officer declined to accept it until company devices were surrendered.

At 7:46, he admitted he had authorized deletion of archived emails.

At 7:50, IT confirmed the deletion command had failed because a backup server had been locked by litigation hold.

Adrian stared at the screen.

For once, he had no line ready.

Then a door opened behind him.

Evelyn walked into his office.

She did not know his camera was still live.

“Did you move the Zurich account?” she asked.

No one in the boardroom moved.

Adrian turned so slowly it was painful.

“Mother.”

Her eyes shifted to the monitor.

She saw us.

The silence lasted maybe two seconds.

Then Evelyn did something no one expected.

She smiled.

May you like

And said, “Good. Now we can stop pretending.”
