Chapter 15 - The Thing Adrian Finally Read

Adrian called me seventeen times that night.

I answered the eighteenth.

“What?”

His breathing was uneven.

“I didn’t know about Zurich.”

“I believe you.”

Silence.

He had expected a fight.

“I didn’t,” he repeated.

“I know.”

“Then you understand.”

“No.”

His voice sharpened. “Mara—”

“You knew about fake consulting invoices.”

He said nothing.

“You knew money was being kept off discovery.”

Silence.

“You signed a one-dollar patent transfer to Vanessa’s company.”

“It was temporary.”

“You lied in a sworn affidavit about our son.”

“That was the lawyers.”

“No. Your signature was under it.”

His breathing changed.

For years he had lived inside rooms where someone else cleaned up every consequence.

Lawyers. Assistants. His mother. Me.

Now there was nowhere to put the mess.

“I loved you,” he said.

I looked out my apartment window.

Traffic moved below like nothing had happened.

“I think you loved being loved by me.”

“That’s not fair.”

“Probably not.”

I surprised myself with that.

Fairness was not the point.

He went quiet.

Then: “Can I see Ethan?”

“That’s up to the supervisor and the court.”

“He’s my son.”

I closed my eyes.

“You told him he wasn’t.”

“I know.”

This time he did not add because I was angry.

A small difference.

Too late.

“I read his school report,” he said.

I almost laughed. “Finally?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

A long pause.

“It says he’s gifted in visual pattern recognition.”

“Yes.”

“It says his processing slows under verbal pressure.”

“Yes.”

“And I…”

He stopped.

I could hear him trying to force a sentence through something he had never practiced.

Shame, maybe.

“I thought he was ignoring me.”

I said nothing.

“I thought he was… embarrassing me.”

There it was.

Not confusion.

Vanity.

“I know,” I said.

He started crying.

I did not forgive him because he cried.

That mattered too.

The next morning, Adrian surrendered his company laptop and two phones.

On one phone, investigators found a draft message he had written to Evelyn three weeks earlier and never sent.

STOP USING ETHAN. I MEAN IT.

For half a second, I felt relief.

Then Dana scrolled down.

There was a second unsent draft.

IF MARA SIGNS, I DON’T CARE WHAT YOU DO WITH THE SCHOOL FILES.

Adrian had almost drawn a line.

May you like

Then erased it himself.
