Chapter 9 - Phase Two
Phase Two had a plan.
Not a murder plan.
A succession plan.
Malcolm knew federal auditors had started asking questions about old Harbor House funds after one victim family reopened a claim.
He feared Grace’s hidden copies still existed.
He also feared Adrian.
Not because Adrian understood the fraud.
Because if Adrian discovered it publicly, lenders and shareholders would panic.
Whitmore Properties was already carrying too much debt.
Malcolm’s solution was control.
Vanessa entered Adrian’s life after Grace’s death.
She became useful quickly.
Help with Olivia.
Comfort at charity events.
Connections to reporters.
A softer public image for the grieving widower.
Then she moved into the mansion.
The plan documents recovered at Orchard House described goals.
1. Identify and remove Grace’s remaining confidants.
2. Locate Harbor archive.
3. Establish Adrian as emotionally unstable if required.
4. Maintain board continuity under Sloane interim authority.
Adrian stared.
“Interim authority?”
Whitmore’s bylaws allowed the board to appoint an acting executive if the CEO became incapacitated or faced a severe personal crisis affecting the company.
Malcolm did not need to own Adrian’s shares.
He needed Adrian discredited long enough to control the response.
Vanessa’s staged nursery incident served two purposes.
Remove Clara.
Create a household scandal.
If Emma was almost hurt because of “an unstable maid Adrian refused to fire,” Vanessa could tell reporters Adrian’s judgment was deteriorating.
Olivia’s video destroyed the story.
Adrian looked at his daughter differently after learning that.
Not as a little hero.
As a child who had been forced to become evidence.
He hated it.
He told her therapist.
“We’re not praising her for saving us every day.”
The therapist nodded.
“Good.”
“She did something brave.”
“Yes.”
“But I don’t want her thinking she has to watch adults.”
“Then show her she doesn’t.”
At home that night, Adrian sat beside Olivia.
“Your job is not catching bad people.”
“I know.”
“No, I mean it.”
She looked at him.
“Then why did Mom tell me to remember the lighthouse?”
Adrian swallowed.
“Because she was scared.”
“So she gave me a job.”
“She did.”
Olivia’s eyes filled.
Adrian continued.
“And I wish she hadn’t needed to.”
“Are you mad at Mom?”
“No.”
“Then?”
“I’m mad that the adults around her made a child part of the safety plan.”
Olivia thought.
“Can I stop now?”
“Yes.”
“Really?”
“Yes.”
She leaned against him.
That mattered more than any arrest.
Federal prosecutors charged Malcolm with fraud conspiracy, obstruction, witness intimidation, money laundering, and charges related to the Harbor settlement scheme.
Heller faced obstruction, stalking-related conduct, evidence theft, and other offenses.
Voss surrendered his medical license during the investigation and faced fraud and obstruction charges related to false documentation and payments.
Vanessa negotiated.
She admitted the staged stroller incident.
She admitted trying to frame Clara.
She admitted Malcolm paid her.
She also admitted something Adrian had not expected.
“I loved you.”
The statement came through her proffer transcript.
Adrian laughed when his attorney James Park read it.
“Convenient.”
James shrugged.
“People can love someone and still exploit them.”
Adrian hated how familiar that lesson had become.
Vanessa said she started as an assignment.
Then the relationship became real.
That did not stop her from following Malcolm’s instructions.
She convinced herself Clara was dangerous.
She convinced herself the stroller would not actually fall.
She convinced herself she could leave before anyone was hurt.
Convenient explanations again.
Then the forensic accountants found Phase Three.
If Phase Two failed, Malcolm planned to release financial records showing Adrian’s signatures on Harbor transfers.
Adrian looked at the documents.
Some signatures were his.
Malcolm had not invented everything.
He had kept the most effective weapon for last.
The truth Adrian least wanted exposed.
