Chapter 4 - The House My Father Gave Away

Orchard House sat forty miles west of Chicago.
Adrian’s father had owned it for thirty years.
When Charles Whitmore died, the estate plan transferred it to Malcolm Sloane for one dollar.
Adrian never questioned why.
“He was practically family,” he told Renee.
She looked at him.
“That phrase keeps doing a lot of work.”
He did not argue.
By sunrise, police had enough to seek records tied to the burner call and the attempted warehouse fire.
Not enough to search Malcolm’s home for Grace’s evidence.
Adrian called him instead.
Malcolm answered cheerfully.
“Adrian. Terrible hour.”
“Vanessa pushed Emma’s stroller toward the stairs.”
Silence.
Then: “What?”
“She tried to blame Clara.”
“Clara?”
“Clara Reyes.”
Longer silence.
That was the first real tell.
Malcolm knew the old name.
Adrian said, “You knew she was back.”
“No.”
“You paused.”
“I’m seventy-one. I pause.”
“Did you know Vanessa before she met me?”
“Of course. She worked with the foundation.”
“She said she didn’t.”
“Then perhaps ask Vanessa why she lied.”
Adrian felt anger rise.
“Why did your number appear on a burner phone dropped by someone who set fire to Pier Seventeen?”
This time Malcolm did not pause.
He sighed.
“Because people call me.”
“At one in the morning?”
“Adrian, you are exhausted. Your wife is dead. Your girlfriend has apparently lost her mind. Your housekeeper is filling your head with conspiracy theories.”
“Don’t call her that.”
“What?”
“Conspiracy theories.”
Malcolm’s voice sharpened.
“I sat beside you while you buried Grace.”
“Yes.”
“I held Emma while you signed death paperwork.”
“Yes.”
“I kept your company operating while you could barely get out of bed.”
“Yes.”
Each fact was true.
That was what made manipulation effective.
Then Malcolm said, “Do not let a servant rewrite your family.”
Adrian’s anger went cold.
“Goodbye, Malcolm.”
He hung up.
Clara stood in the kitchen.
“You heard?”
“Yes.”
“He always talked like that.”
“Like what?”
“Like help created ownership.”
Adrian looked at her.
Clara continued.
“Grace hated it.”
He remembered that too.
Grace refused Malcolm’s offers constantly.
Private doctor.
Security driver.
Financial adviser.
She said every favor came with a chair pulled up beside your life.
Adrian had laughed.
By noon, Vanessa was located at a hotel near O’Hare.
Her lawyer arranged surrender.
Detective Hall interviewed her.
Adrian was not present.
He received only what Renee could lawfully share.
Vanessa admitted knowing Malcolm before Adrian.
She denied being sent to hurt the children.
She said Malcolm introduced her because Adrian was lonely and needed someone “stable.”
Then she admitted Malcolm paid her consulting company.
How much?
Eighteen thousand dollars a month.
For reputation management.
No invoices.
No written scope.
Vanessa said the stroller push was never meant to injure Emma.
She wanted Clara to grab it.
She planned to scream.
Security would see chaos.
A bruise on Vanessa’s arm from an earlier staged argument would support the claim that Clara had become unstable and aggressive.
Adrian felt sick.
“Why remove Clara?”
Renee looked at him.
“Vanessa says Malcolm believed Clara had Grace’s files.”
There it was.
Not jealousy.
Not household drama.
Evidence.
Vanessa also said Malcolm told her Olivia “remembered too much.”
Adrian’s hands curled.
Renee raised a hand.
“Do not go to Orchard House.”
“I wasn’t.”
“You were.”
He did not deny it.
Then Renee placed a printed bank record on the table.
“Vanessa gave consent for investigators to examine payments from Malcolm.”
One transfer stood out.
Not to Vanessa.
From Sloane Advisory to a company called Westbridge Clinical Consulting.
Date:
Eleven months earlier.
Three days after Grace died.
Amount:
$240,000.
Adrian frowned.
“What is Westbridge?”
Clara answered from the doorway.
“Dr. Peter Voss.”
Grace’s private neurologist.
Adrian turned.
“She didn’t have a neurologist.”
Clara looked at him.
“Yes, she did.”
