Chapter 2 - Clara’s Real Name

Police arrived twenty-two minutes later.

Vanessa was gone, but the video was enough to open an investigation into child endangerment and attempted evidence fabrication.

Detective Renee Hall watched Olivia’s recording once.

Then the estate security footage.

Then she asked Clara to step into the library.

Adrian started to follow.

Renee stopped him.

“I need to speak with Ms. Brooks alone first.”

Clara’s eyes dropped.

“That isn’t my legal name.”

Adrian froze.

Renee looked at her.

“What is?”

“Clara Reyes.”

Adrian stared.

He knew that name.

Not from payroll.

From Grace.

Seven years earlier, when Olivia was three, Grace had hired a young nursing student named Clara Reyes to help during a difficult pregnancy that ended in miscarriage.

Clara had stayed six months.

Then disappeared.

Adrian remembered only because Grace had been upset.

“She said you moved to Arizona.”

Clara looked at him.

“I did.”

“Why are you here under Brooks?”

“My mother remarried. I started using her last name.”

“That doesn’t explain why you came back without telling me.”

“No.”

Renee leaned forward.

“Start there.”

Clara took a slow breath.

“Grace called me fourteen months ago.”

Adrian’s heart stuttered.

Three months before her death.

“She had found my number through an old friend. She said she needed somebody in the house who knew Olivia and who did not report to the Whitmore family office.”

“What family office?”

Adrian knew exactly what she meant.

His father’s old advisers.

His godfather Malcolm Sloane.

The lawyers, accountants, security people who had surrounded the family since Adrian was a child.

Clara continued.

“She asked me to apply when the household manager posted a childcare position.”

“You lied on the application?”

“I did not lie about qualifications or background. I used my legal surname. I did not mention that I knew Grace.”

“Why?”

“Because she told me not to.”

Adrian stood.

“Grace brought you into my house secretly.”

“Yes.”

“And you never thought to tell me after she died?”

Clara’s voice tightened.

“I tried.”

“When?”

“The week after the funeral.”

Adrian searched memory.

He had barely been functioning.

Emma was six weeks old.

Olivia stopped sleeping.

Vanessa had not entered their lives yet.

“Who stopped you?”

Clara looked toward the door.

“Malcolm Sloane.”

Adrian laughed once.

Impossible.

Malcolm had been his father’s best friend.

His godfather.

Vice chairman of Whitmore Properties.

The man who sat beside Adrian at Grace’s funeral.

“He told me you were under medical care for grief and that I would be removed from the children if I upset you.”

“I wasn’t under medical care.”

“I know that now.”

Renee asked, “What did Grace find?”

Clara looked at Adrian.

“The Harbor House settlement fund.”

Everyone in Chicago knew Harbor House.

Eight years earlier, a Whitmore-owned apartment building caught fire after an electrical failure.

Eleven people died.

Thirty-two were injured.

Whitmore Properties paid settlements and created a victim-support fund.

Adrian remembered signing the public pledge himself.

Grace had helped families navigate claims.

Clara said, “Grace believed money was disappearing.”

“How much?”

“She said at least six million.”

Adrian shook his head.

“That fund was independently audited.”

“By Sloane Advisory.”

Malcolm’s old firm.

Adrian’s stomach tightened.

Renee asked, “What does this have to do with Vanessa?”

Clara reached into her pocket.

She removed a folded photograph.

Vanessa at a charity gala.

Beside her stood Malcolm Sloane.

The timestamp was two years old.

Long before Vanessa claimed she first met Adrian at a museum fundraiser.

Adrian stared.

“She told me they met through me.”

Clara shook her head.

“No.”

“Why didn’t you show me this?”

“Grace told me photographs were not enough.”

“What was enough?”

Clara’s eyes filled.

“She had records.”

“Where?”

“She hid them.”

“Where?”

Clara looked toward Olivia.

“Grace never told me.”

Olivia had been sitting silently in the doorway.

Now she stood.

“She told me.”

Adrian turned.

Olivia reached under her pajama sleeve and pulled out a thin red thread bracelet.

Attached was a tiny metal charm shaped like a lighthouse.

“Mom said if Clara ever came back scared, I had to remember where the lighthouse points.”

Adrian looked at the charm.

Then at Clara.

“What does that mean?”

Olivia whispered, “Pier Seventeen.”
