Her teachers noticed she smiled more often.
She started raising her hand in class.
She even invited friends over for her birthday—a first since kindergarten.
Richard transformed part of the mansion into a bright playroom and reading library, filling it with everything Sophie had once been afraid to touch.
One afternoon, she stopped in front of the pantry.
It was completely stocked.
Fresh fruit.
Bread.
Cookies.
Juice boxes.
She looked up nervously.
"Can I have a snack?"
Richard smiled.
"You never have to ask."
She hesitated.
