Although Vanessa was gone, Sophie still lived as though she might return at any moment.
She apologized every time she laughed too loudly.
She asked permission before drinking water.
She even hid pieces of bread beneath her pillow.
Richard never forced conversations.
Instead, he simply stayed.
Every morning, they made pancakes together. Every evening, they read one chapter of her favorite story before bed.
Weeks later, Richard gently asked,
"Sweetheart... why do you hide food?"
Sophie stared at the floor.
"Because sometimes grown-ups change their minds."
Those words shattered him.
Richard wrapped his arms around her.
