Chapter 3 - The Discovery

A second contraction hit Claire.

She screamed.

The sound echoed off the marble tiles.

Still, no one came.

She was alone.

---

She thought about the day she had discovered Evan's signature.

She had been in the archives, cross-referencing documents.

She had found a name she didn't recognize.

A shell company.

She had traced it back to Evan.

Then she had traced it back to his father.

Then she had traced it back to Victoria.

The entire family was involved.

---

She had confronted Evan again the next day.

"Evan, I know about the shell companies. I know about the fraud. I know about everything."

He had looked at her with cold eyes.

"Claire, I need you to forget what you saw."

"Forget?"

"Yes. Forget."

"I can't just forget. This is a crime. People are going to prison."

"Claire, I'm not going to prison."

"I love you. Please don't make me choose."

"I'm sorry, Claire. But the family comes first."
