Chapter 15 - Dad’s Sentence

Dad received seven years.

Reduced because he cooperated late.

Too late for my trust.

Early enough for prosecutors.

At sentencing, he asked to speak.

I expected excuses.

He surprised me.

“I told myself I was protecting the company.”

“I wasn’t.”

“I was protecting the version of myself who needed to be the person in charge.”

He looked at me.

“I took from Eleanor because she challenged me.”

“Not because she was emotional.”

“Because she was usually right.”

That confession hurt more than denial.

Then he looked at Sienna.

“I praised Sienna because she agreed with me.”

“I called that intelligence.”

“It wasn’t fair to either daughter.”

Sienna cried.

I did not.

Maybe later.

Dad continued.

“I loved both my daughters.”

“That did not stop me from harming them.”

“I understand now that love is not evidence of good behavior.”

The judge sentenced him.

Mom sat behind him.

No pearl necklace.

No performance.

Afterward, she approached me.

“Can I hug you?”

The question itself almost broke me.

Years earlier, she would have simply touched me because mothers were allowed.

Now she asked.

I nodded.

The hug lasted three seconds.

Then I stepped back.

Progress does not need to be dramatic.

Sienna approached next.

“I’m selling the ring.”

“Good.”

“Brooke says there’s a victim restitution fund.”

I looked at her.

“You want to donate it?”

“Partly.”

“That’s your decision.”

“I thought you’d tell me what to do.”

“No.”

She smiled sadly.

“I’m still getting used to that.”

Then she said:

“I resigned my board seat.”

“Why?”

“I don’t deserve it.”

I frowned.

“That isn’t governance.”

“What?”

“Deserving has nothing to do with whether you’re qualified.”

“I’m not qualified.”

“Then learn.”

She stared.

“You want me back?”

“No.”

“I want you not to confuse shame with accountability.”

That was something I had learned from the numbers.

A bad balance does not disappear because you hate yourself.

May you like

You reconcile it.

Then decide what comes next.
