Chapter 19 - WALTER HAYES ON TRIAL
The payment existed.
A bank record confirmed it.
Walter's account received fifty thousand dollars in 1982.
Two days later, almost all of it disappeared.
Walter remembered none of it.
Public opinion turned.
The viral restaurant story changed shape.
OLD VETERAN HERO OR PAID COVER-UP MAN?
Walter stopped reading.
Daniel did not.
That was another mistake.
He became obsessed with defending Walter online.
Walter finally took his phone away.
"You don't know I'm innocent."
Daniel stared.
"I know you."
"You've known me nine days."
That ended the argument.
Investigators found where the money went.
Forty-eight thousand dollars had been divided among twelve cashier's checks.
Each went to a family connected to Night Glass.
Walter had paid them.
The remaining two thousand stayed in his account.
He had spent some of it.
Rent.
A used car repair.
Groceries.
Walter was ashamed of that small part.
Daniel asked why.
"Because it wasn't mine."
"But you gave almost all of it away."
"Almost isn't all."
Again, the story refused perfection.
The original source of the payment was Crewe's contractor.
Walter had apparently accepted hush money, then redirected most of it to victims' families.
His 1984 self-recording explained why.
"I took their money because it was the only money they would release. I told myself stealing it back made me righteous. It didn't. It made me part of the lie."
Walter listened to his younger voice.
He cried quietly.
Michael finally returned.
He brought the microfilm.
And one final Thomas Bennett cassette.
Thomas spoke directly to Walter.
"You didn't leave me, Walt. But you did leave the truth."
Walter closed his eyes.
Thomas continued:
"If you're hearing this, stop trying to be the good man in the story. None of us were."
Then Thomas named the person who had ordered the original cover-up.
Not Crewe.
Not Voss.
A senior official long dead.
The conspiracy had no living mastermind left.
Only people still carrying its consequences.
And that was when Walter understood what the final chapter had to be.
