Chapter 15 - RAYMOND COLE'S FAILURE
Raymond met Walter in a federal interview room.
No medals.
No uniform.
Just two old men.
Walter placed the payment record between them.
"You were paid to kill Voss?"
Raymond nodded.
"Off-book."
"Did you?"
"No."
"Why?"
"I was twenty-four and scared."
Walter almost laughed.
After everything, the answer was ordinary.
Raymond found Voss in 1983.
Voss begged.
Offered evidence.
Raymond took it.
Then reported Voss dead.
Another false report.
Another frightened young man choosing the easiest door.
"What happened to the money?"
"I gave most of it to families from Night Glass."
"Most?"
Raymond looked ashamed.
"I kept eight thousand."
Walter stared.
"For what?"
"My mother's mortgage."
No heroic explanation.
Raymond had done something corrupt for a reason he still loved.
Walter understood too well.
Raymond later tried to expose the operation internally.
His career nearly ended.
He stopped.
Then rebuilt it.
Promotions came.
The truth became harder to confess each year.
Walter asked:
"Who shot Voss?"
Raymond did not know.
But he knew who might fear the records most.
A former intelligence contractor named Alan Crewe.
Crewe had built a respected security company after Night Glass.
He was now a major donor to veterans organizations.
Including the nonprofit once registered under Michael Bennett's name.
Michael had never registered it.
His identity had been used.
Then Daniel's phone buzzed.
His Army command had received an anonymous packet.
It accused Daniel of stealing classified material with Walter Hayes.
Daniel was ordered to report immediately.
