Chapter 9 - The Lawyer Who Knew Sophia Was Leaving

Thomas Mercer had been Daniel’s father’s lawyer.
Then Margaret’s.
Then Daniel’s.
He drafted wills.
Trusts.
Prenups.
Loan opinions.
The document case in the motel footage had belonged to Sophia.
Brown leather.
Her initials embossed in gold.
Daniel had not seen it since her funeral.
Thomas’s phone went off.
His office was empty.
His home security system showed he left at dawn.
Investigators obtained a warrant for his law-office storage.
Inside, they found a private client file that did not appear in the firm’s official records.
SOPHIA CRAWFORD — PERSONAL.
Daniel stared at the label.
“She hired him?”
Detective Lena? Different story. Here Pike plus new detective Mara Singh maybe. Let's add Detective Mara Singh.
Detective Mara Singh, brought in from the state financial crimes unit, shook her head.
“Looks like she consulted him.”
Inside the file was a conflict waiver.
Sophia had asked Thomas for advice about the children’s trust.
Thomas never signed the waiver.
He should have referred her elsewhere.
Instead, handwritten notes showed he met her twice.
One note:
S concerned M/M using trust as leverage. Wants separate counsel.
Another:
S considering temporary separation from D. Fear of family retaliation.
Thomas knew Sophia planned to leave.
He knew about the trust objection.
He later prepared the forged collateral opinion saying the trust had authorized the pledge.
His conflict was enormous.
Daniel felt physically sick.
“What did my mother give him?”
The forensic auditor found payments.
Not from Crawford Harbor.
From Keystone Meridian.
The offshore nominee company in Evan’s name.
Two hundred seventy-five thousand dollars over four years.
Legal consulting.
No invoices.
Victoria whispered, “He was being paid off.”
Mara said, “That’s one possibility.”
Another was worse.
Thomas might have been part of the scheme from the start.
Local police found Evan before sunrise.
He had hidden in a drainage culvert after seeing Thomas through the peephole.
Why run instead of calling police?
Because Thomas had texted him five minutes earlier.
YOU ARE ABOUT TO BE MADE RESPONSIBLE FOR KEYSTONE. COME WITH ME AND I CAN FIX IT.
Evan knew what “fix it” meant now.
He ran.
Good.
Thomas did not find him.
Bad.
Thomas disappeared.
The document case went with him.
Mara issued a statewide alert.
Daniel returned home at noon.
The twins were building a cardboard harbor on the living-room floor.
Elena sat nearby.
Daniel watched for a moment.
Then Miles looked up.
“Is Grandma coming?”
“No.”
“Ever?”
Daniel sat on the floor.
“I don’t know.”
Noah asked, “Did she put the bad bag?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Daniel chose the truth they could carry.
“She wanted Elena to leave, and she did something very wrong to make that happen.”
Miles frowned.
“Because of money?”
“Partly.”
“Money is stupid.”
Elena almost laughed.
Daniel said, “Sometimes people are.”
Miles looked at him.
“Were you?”
Daniel did not expect the question.
“Yes.”
Elena’s eyes moved to him.
“How?”
“I signed papers without reading them.”
Noah said, “Teacher says read before signing.”
“Your teacher is smarter than I was.”
The boys accepted that more easily than adults would.
Children often do not need parents to be invincible.
They need them to stop lying.
That evening, Daniel asked Elena what she wanted.
She looked confused.
“About what?”
“Your job. This house. Everything.”
“I want the boys safe.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
She was silent.
“You were handcuffed on my driveway because my family decided your work made you disposable.”
Her face tightened.
“I was their maid.”
“You are their caregiver.”
“I am also a maid.”
“Those are not insults.”
“No.”
She looked at him.
“But they become insults when people think the person doing the work belongs to the house.”
Daniel nodded.
“What do you want?”
Elena thought.
“A lawyer.”
He almost smiled.
“Good.”
“Not yours.”
“Better.”
“I want my protector role explained by someone independent.”
“Agreed.”
“And if I stay employed, I want a contract that cannot be terminated by your mother, your wife, your brother, or anyone whose last name opens the front gate.”
“Done.”
Elena looked at him carefully.
“And the boys need a therapist.”
Daniel swallowed.
“Yes.”
“And you need to be home.”
That one hurt.
“I know.”
“No.”
Her voice sharpened.
“You know in the way rich men know they should exercise. I mean actually home.”
Daniel stared.
Then his phone rang.
Mara.
“We found Thomas Mercer’s car.”
“Where?”
“Airport parking.”
“He flew?”
“No.”
“Then where is he?”
“Security video shows him entering a private hangar.”
Daniel’s blood ran cold.
Crawford Harbor owned two corporate jets.
Mara continued.
“One aircraft departed forty minutes ago.”
“To where?”
“The flight plan says Nassau.”
Offshore money.
Offshore company.
Missing legal archive.
Thomas was leaving the country.
Then Mara said, “There’s another passenger.”
Daniel gripped the phone.
“Who?”
“Michael.”
